Interesting design philosophy. He seems very lightly equipped and nimble. Has weaponry outpaced armour to the point that any armour capable of providing worthwhile protection would be too cumbersome, so cover and concealment are the infantryman's only defense? What do you mean by having a variable caliber assault rifle?Β

Hi, in my IP's universe, railguns are common, and have pretty much replaced gunpowder weapons, (except maybe the odd AK-47 or licensed foreign made derivative).
Some man portable railguns available to the TRSF are so powerful as to penetrate even concrete cover, and definitely so-called present day 21rst century armour protection. My IP takes place around 75 years to perhaps 2 centuries from 2015. In such times, troops are usually given environmental protection gear, and the futuristic kevlar equivalentΒ or external ballistic plates can only do so much.
Some characters or machines from this same TRSF faction possess infra red or other forms of detection capability to see enemies behind some forms of cover, which goes well with the wall-piercing railguns. On Earth, optical camouflage and high-tech spoofing are used to fool electronic detection gadgets. Running quickly or having access to a speedy land vehicle definitely helps to avoid getting hit by a railgun slug. However, being sneaky and flanking, ambushing or outmanoeuvring the enemy will give the best results and result in fewer friendly casualties.
My so-called variable caliber auto rail can expand or contract to fit slugs of different diameters and types. For example, the standard auto rail slug is 11m, and can hold 30 slugs per box magazine. If for some reason they need to use a smaller caliber like 5mm slugs or larger 15mm slugs, Strike Infantry have that choice for different targets.Β
