Description Oops forgot to upload this yesterday, another pic of Vitriolize standing tall! You can see more of the whole doll in this one. I'll be taking some studio turnaround photos later today.

I make my dolls entirely from scratch, staring with a wire armature held together with epoxy putty. I then sculpt the fimo details on and bake the whole thing. Once it's out of the oven I wrap it in quilt batting then measure a pattern and cut the fur. The fur is hand sewn using a ladder stitch to hide the seams, then brushed and painted with dylon fabric paints. Any details are glued on (like feathers or more fur), the fimo painted with acrylics and finally covered in a matt varnish to protect the paint, or gloss varnish on nails, eyes and scales/beaks.

I do take commissions! Send me an email hello@magweno.com for more info

Thanks for looking!

Just stumbled across this older work of yours that I had not seen before! I like the neon green claws especially!

Thank you - they had a layer of white underneath to make them really bright. (I can't take credit for the design of course, this was a commission.)

I've been wondering, is it a ball and socket joint armature inside? I've been using a simple wire frame, but seems to losen after a while in areas.

This one isn't, no. I've used wire for years, various gauges and metals. Galvanised steel is the best for me, I've tried aluminium and it breaks almost instantly so it's the worst. I don't twist them or anything because I think the wires rub against each other and cause the metal to fatigue faster, just single strands of quite heavy gauge galv. steel, sometimes I coat them in plastic but I don't think it makes too much difference.

I have abanadoned wire lately tho in favour of plastic ball and socket armatures but they come in standard sizes and don't have a very wide bending angle so it limits posability quite a lot. also expensive - which is passed on to the buyer. however it's almost indestructable, so I give commissioners the option based on how much they thing they're going to 'play' with it and their budget.

Ah, that makes sense. I thought it looked like it was ball and socket. I can't afford that, and none of the craft stores around my area sell those, so getting it online would have to be the only way... but like I (and you) said, it's expensive. However, it makes it look more life-like with limits on how far it can pose. That's also a good idea about giving commissioners the option. Love your work! Keep it up! And thank you for the insight.

It limits posing in a bad way, wire can bend back on itself, that's like 350ΒΊ. Plastic B&S has a max 75ΒΊ angle :/ If you think of a horse they often bend their hooves really far back so B&S is really limiting. Unless it's a ginormous doll and you have several links making up the curve, but to bend back 270ΒΊ takes a 3-4" radius, roughly! So it would really have to be a huge doll.

It works out at something like Β£3.50 a foot from where I get it, not too bad but a huge mark up on wire which is same price for 50m.

Ah, that's true! I never thought of that. It shows that I don't (and haven't used B&S joints) LOL. I can see what you mean now that you brought that up. Especially if you're doing a horse type of sculpture (or like you said, a hoofed one). That would be extremely limiting!

Here, wire isn't so bad to get... I can go and cut it off some of the older fences that we're thorwing away. That way I'm reusing!

oki doki first of all, love this. second of all. ive been stuck in just plain sculpture for cenntttuurries. but i've seen alot of these poseable creatures. like woodsplitterlees and yours and some others. ive been attempting to make my own at o this pure inspiration. and i can sculpt and do the wires. but idk how to do the body. so they are soft and fluffy. like a stuffed animal sorta. any clues/help on that?

Do you dye the fur to get the spots where you want them? Airbrush?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Magweno In reply to Maroon-Ryu [2011-10-02 08:23:41 +0000 UTC]

I wish I had an airbrush... *daydream*
I use dylon fabric paints and just brush them on carefully with a toothbrush (so they don't clump up).
