Am I correct in assuming that you were inspired by the Dark Woman's lightsaber?

You are correct. The basic design was indeed inspired by her saber.

Nice job on this, might I inquire on the method for the filigree?

MagyarEagle In reply to 2753Productions [2010-04-21 09:15:09 +0000 UTC]

It took me several tries to get it right, but ultimately what I did was to use splines, outline the pattern, and then apply a project spline modifier in Cinema 4d. I then did an extrude nurbs on the spline, with everything extrusion setting set to 0, and then turned it into a polygon object, creating a flat outline, on the surface. I then extruded the polygon. The reason for doing this was so that it would extrude equally along the normals, not just a single axis. And then I textured them, using a simple cylindrical (with caps) method of projection. Hope this was helpful. If you want, I could make a tutorial for this method.
Anyways, if you have any questions, or if I wasn't clear somewhere, please feel free to let me know.
Cheers!

P.S. I love your gallery

Ahhh different method but hey it worked I was thinking you might have used ZBrush, which enable you to sculpt gorgeous detail into something like this

MagyarEagle In reply to 2753Productions [2010-04-22 11:00:30 +0000 UTC]

Nah, that entire piece was pure C4D. I might try it next time, but Zbrush would have lacked the precision of tracing a pattern like that, and increased the polycount through the roof lol

2753Productions In reply to MagyarEagle [2010-04-22 11:38:53 +0000 UTC]

LOL true the poly count would be slightly higher, but not much if you follow certain steps As far as precision goes you can use the mask tools in ZBrush, and adjust the level of softness to get very precise cuts, like a laser, and when ready to export this now high poly mesh you use a tool called "Decimation Master" and adjust the "poly resolution" It keeps the detail but leaves the poly's behind

MagyarEagle In reply to 2753Productions [2010-04-22 21:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but at the time I wasn't nearly as familiar with Zbrush as I am now. Now, I would have probably used the topology tools to get the exact lines I wanted, and only used decimation master on the final step. Masking is always another alternative, as you pointed out. With my current pieces, Zbrush usually, but not always, enters the equation at one point or another. Especially with their UV Master, which has greatly eased the work of UV mapping complex characters. That, and the topology tools, are probably my favorites at this point. I still need to play around with Zspheres, and learn how to use those effectively, lol

Ahhh yes, well I still use version 2 of ZBrush lol, so some of those things you mentioned don't work with mine

I'm glad you liked the model.
I tried several different color schemes, that was the one that simply worked the best. Any suggestions would be more than welcome!

I would just loose one of the colors, I find a 3 color scheme usually works best.

If it was during the height of the Great Sith Empire, shouldn't it have a power cord attached an external power pack?

This series is set before the comics, and in fact is deliberately set earlier than any canon. If you look at canon, you will see that the galaxy is a technologically static place, and in some cases the the technology actually gets worse, take for example the fact that the tech in Knights of the Old Republic is in some cases far more advanced than any of the movies.
The foundation of the Golden Age is the the idea that cycle of empire and anarchy has happened again and again in the course of civilization. At this point in time, the Korribani are slaves to the Sithri, and after the destruction of their masters begin calling themselves Sith. This is the era of the First Republic, which is the successor to the last Galactic Empire. Lightsabers in this era are advanced in large part due to the force powered technology of the time, and in the nearly 50,000 years between this and the battle of Yavin, tech ebbed and flowed. There will be more from this series coming soon.

Ezek a történetek rajongói találmányok?

Raverunner [2008-05-04 15:51:22 +0000 UTC]

I love the designs and shape, as well as the render of it. All that is very good, though one problem. There is no technology in it. As such an advanced weapon that uses lasers and light, and all that, you would most likely at least need an on/off switch tops. This is supposed to be at least before Luke Skywalker and Darth Vadar, right? Yet this seems 10,000 times more advanced then both of their lightsabers. Everything is sleek and hidden. But like I said, I do love the fantasy earthy vibe it has.

MagyarEagle In reply to Lord-Malachi [2010-04-06 07:38:01 +0000 UTC]

Lord Malachi is right, different lightsabers in this era use different methods of activation. Some, such as this relied on being in the possession of a force sensitive in order to activate.
In my piece Side By Side Lightsabers, you can see a large black crystal in the base of the saber. That was the activation mechanism.
