Description
I simply love to do the ratings. And I know my opinions to most episodes are very unpopular.
The rating scale is:
Excellent
Good
Ok
Meh
I'll be honest, season 8 was the weakest one to me (along with season 6), so my ratings are more negative in this case.
1. School Daze Part 1 -"Good" -I don't really like the idea with "The School of Friendship", that's just not how friendship should be learned, but the only bright side of it and season 8 itself are the Young Six. I really fell in love with those characters.
2. School Daze Part 2 -"Good" -This two-parter wasn't really that interesting, but it had some pros as well and it's enough to me to consider it good.
3. The Maud Couple -"Meh" -I'm sorry, I just despise Mudbriar, he was obnoxious. I was totally on Pinkie's side in this one. I would feel the same way. I believe Pinkie deserved an apology as well.
4. Fake It 'Til You Make It -"Meh" -Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of assertive Fluttershy -specifically the "jerk" Fluttershy, neither fashion, so this episode was not my cup of tea. And that ending... what the hell was with that ending and turn around?? That was one of Fluttershy's weakest and most confusing roles.
5. Grannies Gone Wild -"Good" -This one looked so bad pretty much until the end which was quite surprising and heartwarming and suddenly gave this episode a better touch. My biggest problem with this episode is Applejack. I expected some explanation in the end.
6. Surf and/or Turf -"Excellent" -I admit, this episode is pretty much a cliché with a boring ending, but CMC's being called by map, first return of the Hipogriffs in the show, interesting new character (I really like Terramar -his dessign and personality too), Scootaloo perceiving swimming as flying was one of the most bittersweet moments in the show history and the song (though with disappointing ending) was really catchy too. That was enough for me to enjoy the episode.
7. The Parent Map -"Ok" (I accidentaly switched the order of this episode and Horse Play) -Pretty boring episode to me, but my problem with it was Starlight's father and a bit of her "backstory". The fact that he spoiled her a whole life and that was one of the reasons she ran away was rather weak and made no sense. I expected she has been neglected by her parents with no one to guide her and she was basically lonely, but they had to come with the clichéd "annoying parent that embarrasses their kid" thing again... This just really ruined her backstory to me (more than "The Cutie Remark" episode). I just couldn't enjoy it. But I felt like "ok" is more appropriate than "meh" for this episode anyway.
8. Horse Play -"Excellent" -Definitely one of the highlights of season 8 and the best Celestia focused episode. It was brilliant to finally see her in a slice of life type of episode rather than her "royal life" again. And the ending and interactions between Twilight and Celestia were really moving.
9. Non-Compete Clause -"Meh" -I just belong to the majority of fans hating this episode. If someone's interested why, I reccommend to check out this reaction. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UugRDD… Also, I finally expect to see an AppleDash episode, where they actually learn something and stop being to stubborn and competitive at every price... It almost seems like they're more rivals than friends. I wish to see them caring for each other more.
10. The Break Up Breakdown -"Excellent" -Even though I'm not a fan of the "romantic relationship" focused episodes, this one got me since it had a sad feeling to it and it was well-written. I kinda like SugarMac.
11. Molt Down -"Meh" -A supposedly huge episode became such a huge miss... I have to say, I didn't enjoy a bit of this episode, it was extremely boring... The only bright side of it was Smolder explaining to Spike about the molt. I hoped it'll be a big and emotional ride leading to such a big event like Spike getting wings (just like when Twilight's got hers, or CMC's got their cutiemarks), but this was literally nothing. Just a pure, boring cliché. Also, that moment was worthy of a celebration and happiness. I thought Twilight and Rarity will be more excited. But nothing has happened, everyone was so cool about it. There was no really exciting or moving moment, no emotion, at least to me. I was bored.
12. Marks for Effort -"Ok" -Another boring episode with only a few enjoyable scenes.
13. The Mean 6 -"Meh" -Really? What was the actual point of this episode? It didn't make sense for Mane 6 not meeting the Mean 6 or Chrysalis.. The Mean 6 were quite enjoyable (though only a rip-offs of the Discorded 6), but it wasn't enough for the episode to be "ok".
14. A Matter of Principals -"Meh" -The lesson was really messed up. The writting of Discord is really bothering me since when he's reformed. After everything Discord did in this episode, he didn't need to apologize in the end and Starlight was at fault. I know he's a Master of Chaos, but still, he could be at least more open about his feelings instead of doing chaos without explaining why. It's getting old and annoying.
15. The Hearth's Warming Club -"Excellent" -I usually enjoy Christmas, or in MLP case "Hearth's Warming" episodes and this one isn't exception. Actually, I think I consider it my favorite HW episode. I really love the personalities of the Young Six. And after this episode, I really fell in love with Gallus. Finally some extra emotions. It's my favorite season 8 episode for sure.
16. Friendship University -"Ok" -I found this one pretty boring as well. Though it does have some interesting parts.
17. The End in Friend -"Ok" -Despite Rarity and Dash are the opposites, I wouldn't expect them to end their friendship so easily after a few usual disagreements AFTER 8 seasons. Overall, it was just another boring episode. I find only the ending, when they make up pretty heartwarming. Also, the students were questioning how these two can be friends when they're so different. But aren't the students friends and different from each other too?? How does it make sense? I consider this a pretty significant plot hole.
18. Yakity-Sax -"Good" -While this episode gets hate for a huge plot holes and "horrible" writing of Pinkie's character, I still find it enjoyable. It has a lot of serious flaws, but at least I find this one emotional. And actually, Twilight was more at fault in this episode than Pinkie. Yes, Pinkie was obnoxious with her playing, but Mane 5 were supposed to explain things to her properly, not simply telling her "you shouldn't waste your time doing what you're bad at". And the fact they allowed her to play in the end without pointing out the REAL problem she caused with her playing just ruined the episode and that's why I can't rate it as excellent. If the episode ended properly, it'd probably be there.
19. Road to Friendship -"Ok" -I'll be honest, I'm not really a huge fan of Starlight and Trixie's friendship and while this episode had potential, I don't think it was used. It gave a strange feeling and the fact that the blame was put only at Starlight instead of both sides made it worse. The way they reconciled was also weak. It was too quick and easy after such a huge conflict. I prefer emotional stories, and in a case when the focus is a conflict between characters, I hope for a progressive, emotional, heartwarming reconciliation instead of an immediate one. I rate this episode as "ok" for some good moments and the potential it had.
20. The Washouts -"Excellent" -Only now is starting a wave of an excellent episodes. It's true even this one has its flaws, I didn't like Scootaloo's and Lightning Dust's portrayal here, it almost seemed like Scootaloo was hating on Dash (though there would be a reason due to how Dash acted, but it didn't seem like Scoot sees her as her sister and idol anymore -not to mention the huge plot hole she suddenly didn't know LD's history with RD after she revealed it in S7 to Dash's parents), while Lightning Dust seemed even more villainous than in her first debut. While I didn't perceive her as a real villain in WA, more like just a reckless, but redeemable pegasus who doesn't realize the consequences of her actions and takes things for granted, but here it crossed the line by intentional endangering a kid. I hoped she's changed at least a bit after being kicked out of Wonderbolts Academy, but she's turned into an actual villain instead. Aside of that, the episode was really enjoyable overall. The reconciliation of Scoot and Dash in the end was a very sweet moment and also the Scootaloo fanclub (with Dash's parents).
21. A Rockhoof And a Hard Place -"Excellent" -Normally, this would be a another boring cliché episode. And then, near the end it suddenly turned into one of the darkest topics. This is, what I remember, the first time the show has touched the topic of "suicide". I really felt for Rockhoof and thanks to this episode, he's on my favorite characters list. Also, Yona is my favorite Young Six character, and this episode made me love her even more.
22. What Lies Beneath -"Excellent" -As a huge fan of Young Six, I enjoyed this episode as well. Watching them face their fears was very interesting -to me, Gallus had the worst challenge. And the way they helped each other was all so heartwarming. And the most important thing, most likely a foreshadowing, they are most likely a candidates for the next generation of Element bearers (which would be cool to me). Seeing the TREE OF HARMONY testing them was pretty creepy and thrilling at the same time. It's probably a tie with "The Hearth's Warming Club" to me.
23. Sounds of Silence -"Good" -Despite getting so much praise, I wasn't moved that much by this episode, but I admit it was a really good one. The song was the best part to me, despite doesn't belong to my most favorite ones. Kirins were interesting, especially their dessigns, but they didn't really grow on me, neither Autumn Blaze. But overall, I enjoyed the story and lesson of the episode.
24. Father Knows Beast -"Excellent" -At first I was very conflicted with this episode due to having another ruined potential to get to know Spike's parents, but the more I watched it and knowing season 9 is supposed to have a huge revelations (of which I hope one will be Spike's parents finally), I find this one more enjoyable. First, Smolder teaching Spike flying and then her opening up his eyes about Sludge were a surprising twists (I really enjoy their friendship and it gives me a feel like Smolder is an older sister figure for Spike). Next, Spike breaking Twilight's heart was just so emotional and intense to see, their relationship being portrayed like Twilight's an adoptive mom of Spike (which I waited to have confirmed a whole time), those things made this episode really powerful and due to still open possibilities I rate it excellent.
25. School Raze Part 1 -"Excellent" -I admit this finale was weaker, but I still enjoyed it. I can say I despised Cozy Glow since her first debut. And honestly, I kinda liked Tirek here. The arc with Mane 6 being in Tartarus was probably the best part of this finale to me, besides the Young Six being the main focus again.
26. School Raze Part 2 -"Excellent" -This episode just got closer to the theory the Young Six may be the next bearers of Elements of Harmony. I really can't wait to see what Season 9, the final season has in store.
It's ok if you disagree, but respect my opinion too.

I'm personally neutral to her, I don't neither like or hate her. I just consider her a great villain. But the S8 finale was truly good.

To be honest season 8 might just be my least favorite due to alot of betrayal. First in Surf and Turf Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo tell each other to never talk to them again simply for not agreeing on where Terramar should live. Scootaloo takes Lightning Dust side over Rainbow Dashs despite being a great mentor for her for so long. In Father Knows Beast Spike breaks Twilights heart saying he has a "real parent" despite Twilight being the one who took care of him. And in the End of Friend Rainbow Dash and Rarity stopped being friends over something so little as not agreeing with what the other likes even after everything they been through throughout the series. How can just turn your back on someone you been so close too that easily?

The Cutie Re-Mark was absolutely the literal definition of EPIC!!! Seriously, it is SUCH an underrated episode! Absolute masterpiece, and my favourite episode ending and montage! And I love how there was so much tension throughout it! Because it's not one of those episodes where you have to make something happen, or stop something happening, it's something that's already happened, and you have to undo it before it's too late or everyone is doomed! I love episodes like that.
Oh wow, I'm rambling, sorry XD

Because of Starlight's backstory... I feel like the only one who actually found her backstory valid. It had some flaws (like plot holes), but Starlight's story, the message of the episode and the concept what would be Mane 6 like if they never connected through the sonic rainboom were the strongest qualities of this finale to me personally.

I know that people hate Starlight's backstory, bu I seriously don't know why. Friendship ending can have disastrous results, and the episode literally shows throughout how much a tiny change can affect the future.

I agree with lots of your choices! Except for Yakity Sax, I felt like Pinkie was acting completely out of character. I do agree with The Hearths Warming Club and What Lies Beneath, they’re also my favorite episodes, though most people prefer Sounds of Silence, which was good, but kind of overrated tbh.

I don't deny she was. But this wouldn't really bother me that much if the lesson was executed properly. Pinkie wasn't the only one to blame. The way Twilight confronted her about the problem was incorrect and really hurtful. And the ending doesn't add up to anything neither because the main problem Pinkie caused remained untouched. So I see the biggest problem in that.
I agree with the rest, though.

Yeah, Twilight was pretty harsh on Pinkie, she could have given her constructive criticism and told her she could perhaps do a little practice with the yaks rather than just going “you’re bad, so stop”. That should have been the moral instead of “If you randomly choose to start doing something you like, but you’re really bad at it, you just keep doing it like that anywhere at anytime you like, even if it disrupts others’ lives, because it makes you happy and that’s all that matters”. However, what bothers me about this episode the most is the fact that Pinkie suddenly cares more about that random instrument that came out of nowhere more than her job, her friends, and making others happy; and becomes totally depressed when she stops playing and doesn’t care about anything else that isn’t the yovidaphone. But anyway this is just my opinion and even if you still like the episode, I respect yours.

-Fake It Til You Make It: Trochu nudná a divná epizóda, ale Fluttershyiné rozdielné osobnosti ma pobavili.
-Surf and/or Turf: Aj mne sa páčila tá pesnička a Terramar bol velmi sympatický.
-Non-Compete Clause: Uuugh... úplne s tebou súhlasím. AppleJack a Rainbow Dash boli podla mňa strašne otravné v tejto epizóde...
-The Break Up Breakdown: Fajn epizóda.
Your mom?!" bolo super. )
-The Washouts: UUUUUGH...
-A Rockhoof and a Hard Place som nevidela...
-What Lies Beneath: Moja najmenej oblúbená epizóda z 8. série je následovaná s jednou z mojich najoblúbenejších.
-Sounds of Silence: Hmm, skvelá epizóda.

Ohľadom Parent Map rozumiem, hoci ja osobne som s "Parental Glideance" nemala žiaden problém (som totiž len zaujatá kvôli mojim vzťahom s rodinou), keďže osobne sa stotožňujem so Scootaloo a jej postojom.
Marks for effort- S týmto naprosto súhlasím. Dôvod, prečo som si epizódu príliš neužila je ten, že som už dopredu oficiálne vedela, že Cozy bude záporák a preto ma táto epizóda najprv zmiatla.
The Mean 6 -A tiež, ten moment, keď Strom Harmónie ničí Mean 6 bol dosť "creepy" a ja sa na to nedokážem dívať, dostávam šok, tak musím otočiť zrak...
The Washouts -S tým TIEŽ súhlasím.
Rockhoof and a hard place -Táto je taká strašne "relatable" epizóda..

Another fan not that fond of season 8 huh? Yeah, it's easily one of my least favorites too. Though I disagree on a few points
The Parent Map, specifically Starlight's father. When he said this at the end: "I just know how hard things were for you when you left home. I guess I wanted you to feel safe, like... when you were young", I got the impression that this excessive coddling happened after she reformed and started to see her father again. And he's doing this because he wasn't always there for her as a child and he's trying to make up/ overcompensate for that now while she's an adult. But even if we assume that he's been doing this her entire life, that still works. According to psychology, children of permissive parents (parents like Firelight) often lack maturity, and are often impulsive, moody and aggressive (which is what Starlight turned out to be). Watch this short video about the episode to see what I mean: www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2myOk…
Also since we never see Starlight's mother is never shown and I doubt we will see her, I'm gonna assume that she's no longer with them, as in dead. Ergo, Firelight is a widower. Much like Goofy, who's a very similar parent now that I think about it.
And I'm sorry, but the finale to this season is easily my least favorite. That's for many different reasons, but one of them is because this feels like an apology for the season 6 finale. Like the show writers saw how many people complained about (nitpicked) that finale and decided to make this to "fix" it or "make up" for it. Even though it didn't need it. Much like the Beauty and the Beast remake in 2017. That film really felt like it was suppose to make the original movie "better" by "fixing" the problems that wasn't really problems, but nitpicky. The season 8 finale felt just like that, but just like the 2017 BatB it doesn't work. If anything, it creates more problems than fixes them
But I don't wanna write a bigger wall of text than I already am. So I'll leave it at that

Unfortunately... We can only hope season 9 will end as a huge hit and won't leave any plot holes...
Well, Josh Haber hinted Starlight had a neglectful parents, so the first choice you mentioned makes more sense. I just didn't kinda get what her father tried to imply. He literally implied he made her feel safe as a kid and was there for her until she left. This just doesn't make sense due to all the circumstances and what we saw. Why would Starlight feel so lonely and was so devastated from "losing" Sunburst if her parents (or even just father) were always there for her and guided her? Her behavior and circumstances of her backstory looked more like of a neglected, lonely child to me personally.
I don't think it's that, mainly because Mane 6 didn't save the day neither here, they were trapped again (despite having more focus now) and that was one of the biggest problems people had with season 6 finale. Writers just decided to choose the Young Six as the new heroes and that was the point. As a fan of the Young Six, I don't have a problem with that, but I can understand why you do.
It's ok if you write more and let it out of yourself.

Yea, I remember Josh Haber saying that Starlight was a latch-key kid. And honestly, the thought of her Father trying to make up for not being there for her much while she was young was actually hayley566's idea. And that made total sense to me and I adapted that.
I don't mind the students, in fact I like half of them (that being Gallus, Yona and Ocellus) but the execution of the finale was all over the place and unfocused. On top of that, I don't feel like them saving the day was earned because, well, they don't have an arc. Or maybe they do, but it doesn't tie into this finale. They don't doubt their abilities to save Equestia or prove themselves to everyone or themselves. It wasn't written specially for them to play a big part to the point where any other character saving the day there wouldn't have made much ,if any difference.
But I don't see how the mane 6 being captured off screen was a legit problem in the season 6 finale. Because the finale was mostly in Starlight's point of view. So the reason why we don't see it is because Starlight didn't see it. The season 8 finale doesn't have that excuse because it's one of those "bird's eye view" episodes, meaning we the audience sees everything that's happening even if the other characters don't. So having Starlight captured off screen feels like a cheap shot. Hell, having her be the ONLY useless character in the episode was a cheap shot! There's really no reason for this plot device. It doesn't add any danger in any way, the stakes are already high with all the magic being drained and being gone forever! So what's the point of dragging Starlight into this? You could write her out of the episode completely and absolutely nothing would change in the story. This is why I feel this way. The fandom endlessly complained about the fact that everyone has to be useless in order for Starlight to shine, so what do the writers do? Write a finale where she's useless and everyone else does something. This is exactly why the show staff shouldn't listen to their fans, they might listen to the wrong people....

I understand where you're coming from. Yes, you're right. I enjoyed this finale myself, but I know it has flaws and it's far from the best finale.

Thanks. Sometimes I feel I go a little too far with this "share your thoughts" thing. I'm pretty opinionated, as you know.

Just know that I never have problem with it. You never bother me with your opinions even when they're different from mine. So if you need to rant or share your thoughts, I'll always listen.

Yup, I know. Some episodes are great but they're minority compared to other seasons.
