And now comes the last of the three Sonic drawings I’ve got today to celebrate how well Paramount’s movie did at the box office, only this time, it’s with something that I’m willing to bet most of you had never even heard of. Everyone’s heard of Pokémon by now, and most people in my audience have seen The Amazing World of Gumball, but who here has ever heard of fats'e? Or shinigami? Or even 93FEETOFSMOKE? Anyone? Anybody here? No? Okay, allow me to explain then.
Recently, I was watching a YouTube channel called The Punk Rock MBA, hosted by Finn McKenty, and I watched his video about emo rappers and the future of rock music. In that video, he talked about what he refers to as ‘emo with 808s’, which he described as and asked about how it “sounds like rock, and it’s part of rock culture, so how is it rap? Why do people call it emo rap?” Specifically talking about how the people in that list are not only getting signed by record labels like Epitaph and Fueled by Ramen, but also don’t actually rap, funny enough, sounding a lot less like Kanye West and more like Blink-182 if Travis Barker was an 808s player instead of a drummer. McKenty described this new trend a lot better than I ever could, so go watch that video if you want a more in-depth look into this rising trend of rock music having 808s in it that started getting a bit more attention with the rise (and really unfortunate death) of Lil Peep in 2017.
That video is where I found the song “Old Me” by fats'e featuring shinigami and 93FEETOFSMOKE (which my older brother described as having video game boss-sounding names), specifically the recently released music video for it where the three singers (and a bunch of others) are at a basketball court doing party stuff. After watching it a few times, my mind eventually went in the direction of Team Sonic dressed up like those three singers at a skate park together! (With a few tweaks, obviously, like Tails’s hoodie not having any words on it and Knuckles wearing a Gumball hoodie, if you look close enough; speaking of, you can also see that I placed the Sonic Heroes in front of a live picture of a skate park as well, just like the characters in Gumball) I especially imagine that if 93FEETOFSMOKE were to be apart of a Sonic-based music video á la Lil Nas X and DaBaby as Chowder and Schnitzel in that Panini remix music video, he probably would be Knuckles!
