Description yeah boring it's just her face . I was trying out that coloring technique where you paint everything in black and white tones first and then add color later. Finally decided to try it out after watching this on youtube . I'll keep practicing :E

Wow! I don't know who this character is but her expression is really interesting. She looks... battle-weary? Something like that... Anyway, this pic is awesome.

Gosh, I love Ulla, she's so different from the usual young attractive characters I've seen, her face seems to tell a story, if you get what I mean. Nice work

I have a question!!!
Okioki
So when adding the colour, do you put it on another layer that's set to multiply/color etc? or...do you just REDO EVERYTHING! D:

p.s. what program do you use??? it's 2 questions and it's cheating and I'm SORRY but it had to be done!!!

Yeah i just put a color layer over it and slap on some colors, varying the hue a little on like lighter parts and stuff.

I did this in OpenCanvas3

You know, I love Ulla. I really do. She's so characterful; not your normal everyday fighter guy/girl, with brawn and not brains.

Her eyes have so much soul.

I think the effect came out nicely, and the mellow coffee colors set a lovely mood to the picture, very cool art.

Is it easy to do it like with black and white first? Because, painting with black and white is easy, but painting with color is hard.

I don't like this picture as much as I like the painting technique. Which I love! It suits the picture very well and is very impressive. Good form!

do you apply the color like a wash and then just delete the black and white layer underneath, or do you keep the black and white layer?

nice pic, btw. i'm getting a tablet soon, so hopefully i'll be able to try this.

i just watched that youtube video, that's a really interesting technique for coloring.

and hey, thank you for posting your own coloring tutorials, when you suck at computers like me, things like 'set the layer to multiply' are really helpful

StarburnerArt [2008-07-02 02:38:45 +0000 UTC]

the technique you used is called an underpainting...mostly used during the rennisance to help get values before using colors. doing it on canvas was a pain in the ass, but it helped by cuttig down paint mixing time.

It's very nice, but the bottom of her nose is a very similar color to the scar on her lip, which threw me off. I'm especially fond of the messy quality to her bangs and the leathery stuff on the back of her neck.

So....it's basically a underpainting using a computer program? In traditional media you would use a color, say a burnt sienna to put down the basic tones. The black/white makes it looks too...I dunno. Myabe, if you used a brown color as a first-layer that would allow the colors to harmonize and bring the diffrent elements together. Good luck using the technique!

As a side-note I would like to add that the technique works a heck of a lot better in real media than in digital because essentially after you paint in the shadows and the first layer of colors the highlights make the image 'glow' and shadows look 'deeper'.

Green also works well under skin to make it look more ... alive (and less pasty)... other than that, great job!!
