Description This is page number 2, I did the b&w drawing part of this one at the same time as Marker Work 1, and this one took a couple of days to color ( I cant spend my weekends drawing all the time!) but I really like how it turned out and I'm thinking of maybe doing something a little larger, with the same process.

good times,

and at the same time it seems so recent. seems like only yesterday we ditched school, went to a friends house, got stoned and listened to 'the wall' for the first time and tripped on caza and moebius.
that was almost 25 fuckin years ago. where has all the time gone?

yes, i know. cracks me up to hear people in their twenties, especially the young ladies, talking about how they have all the time in the world to do this thing or that thing. i laugh because i can remember feeling the same way. i thought i'd be 20 something forever. that somehow, the laws of mortality didn't apply to me.
i dont make a point of voicing my amusement at thier naivety. i don't want to be acused of reminding them of their father or something.

Frankly, age doesn't bother me except when my joints ache when I get up..hahaha.....but seriously, death doesn't hold any fear for me for various reasons, one being a near death experience at age 6. Personaly I believe that we are immortal and death is but a stage and a pleasantly peacefull one at that. It's the circumstances leading up to death that can be frightening.

well, its still all specuation. i had out of bady experiences as a child, but i couln't tell you whether that part of me that left will survive the death of my body or not. think of how upset you get when something of yours is lost or stolen. i'm sure dying is infinately worse tha that....

We all base our individual beliefs on programming and personal experience. When I was 6 I drowned in a pond and was in the water for about 15 minutes before someone found me and gave me CPR and brought me back to life. I stepped into the water to get my beach ball and immediately started sinking. I still remember it vividly, there was no feeling of panic or fear, I just floated peacefully like I was in a warm embrace. I saw a bright light above me which grew larger until I could see that it was like the end of a tunnel which opened up into a world of pure light. There were beings there but they were made of light and one was my grandmother who had passed away the year before. I was at the threshhold of this portal when I started to drift away from it...I had a strong sense that I wasn't supposed to be there yet. The next thing I remember is lying on the ground coughing up water and gasping for air and a man kneeling beside me hold my head under one hand. I had absolutely no feeling in my limbs or any other part of my body and it took a long while before my muscles finally started working again. Since that experience I've always yearned to return to that place of light but I know that I have a path to travel here first. Sorry about the long ramble.

well, you know the argument against all those near death experiences is....namel, yer not actually dead when you have them. so no matter how convincing they may have been, they are most likely some sort of hallucinations created by your oxygen starved brain.
when i was in a coma for 10 days following a head injury i had a series of extremely realistic dreams on a wide variety of subjects, mostly very mundane and dull. in one i was a muslim woman discussing the price of fabrics at a bagdad batsaar (sorry, one key on my computer isnt working, can you guess which one?) in another i was the first black presidential candidate but was killed by a tarantula bite, the spider obviously introduced into my room by assassins.
as pointless as these delusions were, they all seemed totally real to me. not like regular dreams where part of you is always aware you are dreaming.
i'm not combative on the subject of life after death, in facti feel it would be a real waste if our lifetime of experience simply vanished after we died. i just don't see how any one can conclusively prove it one way or another. nobody has ever been medically dead for any period of time and came back to tell us what lies beyond, if only for the simple reason that the body starts decaying immediately after it dies. and all the jesuses and mohamuds and budhas in the world cant change that. its a pleasant thought that we may graduate to a higher plane of existence once we pass, but i can't wager anything on it....

hahaha...oh ye of little faith....haha...Yup, I've heard all the arguments before. Like I said, belief comes with personal experience and I've had many experiences in my life that defy any rational ( as our programming defines rational) explanation. The most profound for me personally happened about 7 years ago. I've always used drawing as a form of meditation where I enter a state of mind where thoughts come together with perfect clarity. I used to deliver pizzas on the weekends til about 5am then I would draw when I got home and for several weekends in a row as I sat drawing and contemplating different aspects of reality I started seeing the connectivity of all things both concrete and abstract..It was like getting a glimpse of little piece of the 'BIG' picture. Then one morning as I sat drawing and contemplating the deeper layers of meaning of humility a wave of pure euphoric energy flooded through me as I saw and understood EVERTHING with perfect clarity. The feeling was like pure love only a million times more intense. It lasted for about 10 seconds which seemed like an eternity after which I found myself sitting on the floor with tears of overwelming joy streaming down my face. The memories of what I actually saw and understood faded quickly like a dream but the feeling has remained. A few months later books started crossing my path which confirmed my contemplations and experiences which had been formed in isolational. As I read more and more it seemed that I was remembering instead of learning something new. To try to explain my personal experiences any further at this point would require volumes and would be pointless anyhow but it brings me back to my original point that belief arises from personal experience. Can I prove to anyone that what I experienced was real? No, but it doesn't matter because for me I know it was real, I feel it in my soul everyday and I have no need to prove anything to anyone. Since the 'enlightenment' experience 7 yrs ago almost all fear and stress has desolved from my life. If this be delusion then so be it, I'd rather face reality without fear and stress than live in fear of dying.

well, i deal with reality in two ways, denial and obsession. i realise blind faith as much as deductive reasoning play equally important roles in our day to day lives. i dont begrudge anyone their faith, although admittedly i have problems with organised religion. but i do intuitively believe in an invisible world that affects our daily lives. although our charactor and attitudes are largely responsible for our lot in life, it does seem that life seems to give us more of the same. like some people always seem to have the worst luck, whereas other people simply can ever do anything wrong. also, things do seem to run in cycles. although now i seem to be enduring a particularly bad cycle in my life, i know eventually things will take an upward swing, and when they do i will know its just another cycle and hopefully preparew for when things start going bad again.
animals are not aware of their own mortality, only humans are cursed with this knowledge. i feel that religion is our way of coping with this.
these painpills are making me very sleepy, so excuse me while i make some coffee.

but again, thats just an assumption.
i've heard from several sources that early christianity had ALOT of references to reincarnation in it.
naturally, most of those got yanked in the middle ages, although, apparently there are still some obscure ones left in the scriptures. i don't remember my bible well enough to point them out however...

Like the disciple asking Jesus if the blindman was born blind because of his sins or his fathers sins? But isn't life based on many assumptions that we are programmed to accept as fact?

actually there are some more black and white than that, but i have'nt studied theology in so long i would'nt even know where to begin to look.
and sure, we assume the sun will always rise and set according to schedule, that gravity will continue to do what it does, and that all the streets and buildings will be in the same place today as they were ysterday. although the most consistant force in the world is human nature, which has remained exactly the same since at least the advent of recorded history. but stuff like religious beliefs and politics, well, there things get a little chaotic....

this piece is really...trippy, for lack of a better word. it reminds me of this hippie festival i just went to. so what influences your art??

MalcolmBlaisdell In reply to beckhanson [2005-09-12 01:57:10 +0000 UTC]

everything influences my art, the way i'm feeling, whats going on in my life, what medium I feel like using, but I never have a clear picture of what the finished product will be, and I've found that you can work on a piece until it looks good as long as you dont stop till it does. I like my art to mantain a fantastic feel something you cant see in "real" life, drugs help give me inspiration sometimes, but you've got to paint what moves you, like try painting a song, you cant mess up cause they dont exist visualy and its up to your own interpretation

I like the sense of depth on this one, Malcolm. I'm getting a kind of vertigo feeling that comes out from behind the face. I also like the line work at the top right and bottom left...it reminds me of coral and cacti. The disembodied lips at the bottom left are really suggestive, especially with the swirly in there.

I also like the color choice. It helps to give me the impression of sand and sea.
