A weird AU I came up with wherein Twilight and Shining Armor are the two children of Empress Celestia of the Equestrian Empire. Not very original, I know, but I like it.

Prince Shining Armor is the captain of the royal guard at Canterlot, the capital of the Equestrian Empire, until he marries Princess Cadence and the two of them move to oversee the wellbeing of the Crystal Kingdom and guard the Crystal Heart. Cadence then becomes known as the Crystal Queen, like her direct ancestor before her, Queen Amore. Shining retains his title as "Prince", as there are no kings in Equestria.

Princess Twilight Sparkle is enamored with the tales of her mothers exploits as the ruler and protector of Equestria. She spends all of her time studying so that she could one day be half as strong and smart and powerful as her mother. She spends so much time studying, in fact, that she has yet to make any friends. Isn't that sad? Celestia has been alive many an eon, made many a friend, and lost many as well, but she knows the value of friendship and companionship. Perhaps it may be time for this baby bird to leave the nest?

I came up with this AU after seeing the way that Twilight and Celestia act towards one another is very like a mother and daughter. And I saw a comic a long while back where Twilight had a dream that she was Celestia's secret child that she had to give up for adoption to keep safe. I always liked that comic and that idea, but in this AU Twilight and Shining Armor both are Celestia's children and they are not kept secret for protection's sake.
