Description I absolutely love seeing new sketches by in my deviations inbox. His combination of old-school comic style rendering and cartoony stylization makes me happy. I decided to finally crank out a fanwork of one of his many critter ladies. This is Donna Plympton, "adventurer, con artist, and paranormal investigator."

Here are the original reference pics:

Given the relative lack of clothes she has in these, I made up an outfit based loosely on the bondage accessories she has in the one pic. Plus I gave her a modified Walther P-38 (favorite gun of one Lupin III), and a hunting knife, in case she gets bored. Or endangered.

Oh man, those little scratchy lines are great.

Nice interpretation of the character

I'm using this new sketchbook I got fairly cheap from a pottery for this new batch of drawings. The paper is very course, so a lot of my mark making has an almost dry-brush feel to it, which is kinda neat. On the other hand, it makes some of the solid fields of black look too faded when I scan them, so there's a trade-off.

Paper types are such a treat to play around with... yeah, they all have their pros and cons. This stuff seems to be working nicely for you. Well, Photoshop is a godsend for tweaking the scars of a scanner

Sharp, dynamic, and lively; beautifully constructed and fantastically well inked...

Thanks! This is more of that Finlay influence trying to culminate in my work, which I'll hopefully start using and understanding better in forthcoming drawings.

Interesting shape and pose to the figure and face. The way you did the hatching work is interesting too. Good job.

I trying to work more gray tones into my ink work and create a fuller range of tones and mark making. It still feels awkward at times but I'm working on it.

Well, the lines do read as gray tones, so it's working. The figure does have a very full, contoured, 3 dimensional look.

Thanks. It's sorta the kind of thing Virgil Finlay did, using tons of parallel, curvilinear hatch lines to both act as a graytone and describe the form of the figure more clearly. Except he was a ridiculous master of it, and I'm only just starting to use that sort of thing. I'd also like to try and create a more elaborate graytone image using only hatch marks, like Travis Charest is doing these days. He's freakin' insane.

Thx, I'm happy it came out half-decent. I don't try this angle very often so I knew it was risky.
