Description Maybe Ursula was teased, by the mermaids, for being different. She shut out the world and grew bitter.

I want to believe she wasn't always evil.

PS. The painting was done with a mouse, so please excuse the extreme sloppiness >_<

There are, honestly, alot of different versions of what might have happened. There is the idea that she was Triton's sister but in a few episodes of the animated "The Little Mermaid" series, its shown that the mermaids and Cecelians are different species altogether. One idea is that Ursula attempted to make copies of the magickal triton for her Cecelian army and was banished for her attempt to wage war with King Triton.

One other version I've seen floating around but have my doubts about is that Ursula was actually romantically involved with Triton and was banished for trying to destroy the relationship between him and his then-Queen. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what Disney gives us!

A cut-for-time/focus plot point in the original movie was that Ursula and Triton were blood siblings (thus, Ariel would have been her niece!).  On their father's deathbed, Triton was declared the new king, while Ursula was basically forced to settle for second place with the gift of her magical shell necklace.  She got greedy and tried to take over, and now-King Triton banished her for her treachery (but didn't kill her because they were still family after all).  As further punishment, Triton transformed her into a cecaelia (which would be the equivalent of a "Scarlett Letter").

This sub-plot was ultimately removed because it drew too much attention from the main focus of the movie- Ariel and her story.  All that survived was a vague reference that Ursula once lived in the palace, was banished, and had a [somewhat] magical golden necklace.

In "Disney's The Little Mermaid On Broadway" (discontinued 2013), this sub-plot was brought back, with the addition that the necklace was the source of all her power.  When Ariel destroyed the necklace at the climax of the show (which was completely redone to eliminate the awkward giant Ursula, and give Ariel a bit of control over her own story which was noticeably absent in the movie), this both released all the critters that she had created and instantly killed Ursula herself.

According to the Broadway version, she's actually Triton's twin sister. When their father (Poseidon) died, he willed his trident to Triton and his shell to Ursula. Being the male child, Triton got the throne, which Ursula felt was unjust; she vied for the throne and was thusly banished from Atlantica.
Hopefully they'll do for her what they did for Maleficent when the Little Mermaid reboot comes out, show her hidden backstory that was only hinted at before.
