It's so friggin awesomesaucesome! I love the fact that this is one of the only lizard photos in which you can see the hands clearly. I'm sooo using this as a guide for my dragon gloves right now xD. Even the colours are the best, the pattern is wonderful too.

The colour! Just gorgeous...! I am more used to the blue and grey ones, never know that there is this jewellery like green to be found at the maltese ones!

The color is amazing! I love the sharpness and clarity of the picture.
What a fascinating little lizard, goes to show how much biodiversity is on Malta
We only have a few skink lizard species here in eastern Virginia

really? but you must have other, larger animals too? In malta we have a different subspecies of this lizard living on almost all the minor islands, which are just tiny rocks jutting out of the sea

Oh no we have a lot of wildlife! I meant as far as lizards go xD
Bears, deer, fox, porcupine, mink, bobcat, coyote, you name it.

Lucky!!! we used to have such things in prehistoric times. We had our own endemic species of dwarf elephants, giant otters, giant lizards, giant tortoises, giant doormice, swans and even hippos! ^^ but now our animal life is a lot smaller =/ do you have wolves too? i love wolves so much, they're my favourite animal

WhyIsMyKittyAButt In reply to Maltese-Naturalist [2010-07-21 17:38:55 +0000 UTC]

I wish! Only in zoos, they used to be included in our region tho along with other prehistoric fauna around the iceage 10,000 years ago Coyotes are the closest thing to a wolf here in Virginia, but they do live out towards the northern areas and western regions.

still it's better than what we've got. Our largest mammals are rabbits, not counting the stray cats we'd have birds, but there's the illegal hunting. we used to have dolphins and you'd see them swimming alongside the boat that ferried us accross the island, but i haven't seen one in ages

WhyIsMyKittyAButt In reply to Maltese-Naturalist [2010-07-21 17:49:02 +0000 UTC]

Wow I would think you would have deer or something? That sucks
Ha our bobcats would eat your stray cats
We have a lot of marine mammals here too, Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, dusky dolphin, humback whales and pilot whales farther offshore, and occasional grey whales I do believe

Maltese-Naturalist In reply to WhyIsMyKittyAButt [2010-07-21 17:56:34 +0000 UTC]

lol ^^ we used to have deer, but not anymore we do have quite a lot of cetaceans too, but i've never seen any whales personally, but they are on the increase. we used to have turtles breeding in our beaches, but over crowding stopped them years ago we have sharks too, because the warmer shallows of the Mediterranean attract breeding sharks, but casualties from sharks are almost unheard of. One of the larges sharks ever was caught in maltese waters, off the western coast of the island [link]

Aw sorry to hear about the turtles! It seems
Malta used to have a great biodiversity before
people came along, with the aves poaching and all.
DEAR CHRIST THAT IS A BIG SHARK Great hwite sharks
are rare around Va, only in the colder months do
they show up. We do have a lot of dusky, blue
shark, nurse shark, sand shark, and some others
I can't think of atm.

lol ^^ well unfortunately i've never seen any of the apex predators, only a few small coastal sharks, like dogfish. But we also have quite a few octopus, squid and cuttlefish, and they're quite easy to find when snorkelling, but most people catch them for food, they're a delicacy here in malta One good thing about people is that we have history, one of the most intersting and most ancient histories of the mediterranean we have the oldest free standing structures in the world, even older than the pyramids of egypt!

they sure are to think that these were created by a primitive civilisation living to over 5000 years ago on a tiny rock in the middle of the Mediterranean sea ^^

how can you tell the difference?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Faunamelitensis In reply to Maltese-Naturalist [2010-07-10 09:07:32 +0000 UTC]

well, generally, there are more striped lizards on Gozo than in Malta, and the underpart of the head of Malta lizards is generally more reddish than those of Gozo. in Gozo you can also find quite common in the wild, while in Malta mainly in urban areas.
