"You idiot!" the man shouted, and hit the women in her face yet another time. A small drop of blood welled up from her lip.
"I didn't do anything wrong," she softly said through her tears, but it didn't help. It only resulted in more hitting.
A little boy was sitting in the corner of the room, crying without sound, hands covering his ears. He was only five years old, but knew exactly what was going on. And it hurt him, it hurt him so much…

A few days later, a strange lady was standing on the porch, ringing the bell. The woman from the house was a little startled and touched the bruises on her face for a quick moment. Then she slowly started walking to the door. The door handle moved down very slow under her hand, as if pushing it down cost her all her energy, but it finally made the door open. The lady behind the door looked worried, as if what she had just found was more serious than she imagined. She guided the woman back in and pushed her on a sofa, after which she sat down across from the woman on the coffee table. The little boy, who had silently been playing behind that sofa, stood up and disappeared to his room.
About half an hour later, the woman knocked on his room and opened the door.
"David? David, honey, I have to speak to you.. Do you have a moment?"
The boy slowly climbed down from his bunk bed and sat down, on the lower bed, next to his mother.
"It's about that nice lady that was here a moment ago," the woman continued. "She's really worried about you and me, you see.. Because daddy is- … Well.. He isn't the nice man anymore that he once was.."
The boy softly nodded.
"And this lady.. She wants us to have a better future. Or you, at least. So within a week, she will take you with her for some time and you're going to sleep over at a house full of children from your age. You'll be able to make new friends there, isn't that nice?"
The boy only nodded again.

Two weeks later, the nice lady softly wakened the boy.
"David? Wake up, honey, and please come with me. Be sure not to wake the other boys, though."
The boy got out his bed, put on his slippers, and silently followed the lady. In her office, he sat down and she brought him a warm cup of tea, before she herself sat down too.
"Listen carefully, David. Something really bad has happened. Your daddy had gotten real angry at your mommy, and you can't go home yet now… But you can't sleep here too long anymore either, so we're going to look for some other nice people where you can sleep over for a few weeks, okay? I'll make sure that they're going to be real good for you and you will be able to see mommy or me every once in a while too. Do you understand that?"
The boy nodded. It was a little hard for him, but he understood most.

A week passed, the people from the children-sleeping-house, as he had named it for himself, had packed all his stuff, and now he was walking on the airport, hand-in-hand with a ground hostess.
"Where are you going little boy? Are you going to visit your family? That must be real nice, isn't it?"
He only nodded again, having the feeling that was the only thing he'd been doing lately, nodding.
"Oh, here we are. That nice man over there is going to help you from here on, okay? Well then, there you go, on the plane, almost up in the air! Have a nice trip!"
The boy smiled and entered the plane. All other people were staring at him, probably asking their selves what a small boy like him was doing on a plane all on his own. But he wasn't on his own. The nice man was going to help him, right? And he was old enough to take care of himself, he even turned six today! But there was no one to celebrate it with..

As the plane landed and he walked off it together with the man that had called himself Eric, a single man approached them. He started talking to him, but the language that man spoke didn't make any sense to him. He didn't understand a word. Eric talked back, in that funny language. They sounded real worried, but he had no idea what they were talking about.
Some worried talking passed, and the man with the funny language nodded and then kneeled down.
"I'll take you home with me," he said to the boy, "we have a really nice house and a little boy and I think you will have it real nice over there."
The boy nodded again, as he did so many times, though he still didn't understand a word of what that man was saying. Eric handed the man his small suitcase and the man took the boy's hand in his free hand.
"There's a taxi waiting for us outside, I don't think he likes it that we're a little late, so we have to hurry a bit. Are you a good runner?"
The boy nodded again, still not understanding anything, when he felt a hand on his head. It was Eric.
"Listen good, kid. Fukaba is a real good friend of mine and a really nice man. He will take really good care of you, and I'm sure you'll like it at his place. I'll come to look you up once, okay?"
"Okay", the boy whispered. Eric smiled.
"It's nice to hear your voice once, before I leave again."
That was the last time in a while he would hear a familiar language…
