Description I don't know whether my English work or not. Hopefully, the process would be of help to you.

1.At the start, I sketched roughly the composition of the picture at the layer 0(It's upper layer, I call it L0) by pencil tool in px1. I usually use this color when sketching.

2.Filling the layer1(It's lower layer, I call it L1) with bucket tool. The color is the base of this pic.

3.Next I've put the similar colors on the color of L1 by watercolor tool(13~20px), to make the shadowed area and the lighted area.
The contrast drawn now is the main shading tone of this pic. The characters are shaded according to this tone. The depth of the view and the ground line are decided on this step.

4.On L1, drew the outline of the character that most stood out in the background by watercolor tool in 4~5px with lighter color. After done the line roughly, hide L0, then drew the detail of the character. Basically, according to the light source of the background, the colors were put to shade and detailing.

5.Set L0 to view again, and drew the outline of the second character of the bg on L1 following the line of L0.
Switched over L0 to invisible again, and added detail.

6.Brought L0 into view again, then drew Sonic on L1 by watercolor tool(2~8px). I put blue, gray, and colored his white parts grayish pink or orange. 255.255.255 white is too strong in the tone of this pic.

7.Deleted the sketchy lines of L0. Added more details to the characters and the bg on L1 with watercolor tool(1~2px).

8.Switched active layer to L0.
With pencil tool in 1px, Alpha 255, added a cloud of dust.

9.Box eraser tool, Alpha 240, twice or more time. White parts became translucent, and I added more effect by water color tool.

10.By using dodge-tool and lighten-tool, more detail added to the pic. The head light of the robot and the ray were lighted up, the dark part of flame at the left side was burned by dodge tool.
The part that I want it to be the most standing out is Sonic's face. To sharpen the focus on the center of his face, I added the dodge effect.

Amazing~! @o@

You're very, very, very talented! ^^ I had no idea you could get such amazing effects from that program- thank you very much for posting this up. It's always nice when talented artists share their methods with the less experienced. =3

Two years after our promise(is there such a thing?), Mana-sama did some great tutorial at last. XD

Anyway, this really helps a lot... hope so?
*add fav*

PS.
Haven't been to DA for a year, how're you there?
Your lastest arts claim how a boost your drawing skill had made.

Your English is fine. I know people who grew up speaking it and you would never know it to hear them talking. They sound like they're just learning.

Often the translation machine changes the word to wrong meaning. Japanese word order is different from Western language's, so the machine is confused easily. XD
Anyway, I'm relieved when I find my native language here. Thank you for your concern.

It is not hard to understand, but rather simple. Because this applet has only two layers.

Whoa! I love of how U did the step by step tutorial! I love of how U did the BG first then the foreground with the characters then effects! I uually go forground then BG, but this is much better! I'll love to try that technique out!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

manaita In reply to SesakaTH [2006-09-13 02:43:19 +0000 UTC]

It is half and half that I choose to start off from either the BG or the foreground. I often draw the characters at the lower layer, next do the BG at the upper layer, and erases carefully the BG that overlapped on the character.

On the very last one, I adjusted the brightness of the pic to make the contrast clearly by using dodge-tool and lighter-tool. And a flare was added.

Shi-PaintBBS. This Oekaki is a old edition, but I like more it than Shi-Painter that is a current version.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

manaita In reply to BlazeTBW [2006-09-13 01:22:32 +0000 UTC]

I was encouraged by your kind comment.

Indeed, it's often said that the most difficult English to read for people that has another language is written by the native speakers. If oversea people try to read Japanese, the most difficult word to interpret might be the words up-to-date among the young people than Kanji.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

BlazeTBW In reply to manaita [2006-09-13 09:02:26 +0000 UTC]

Which is another reason I love Katakana! ... but for now it's easiest for me to interpret Hiragana... hopefully it'll be just as easy to read by the end of the semester.

Sad, but true. It's down right pathetic when someone can't even speak (or type) in there own language... Yet people like that make up the majority of the English speaking net community.
