Description Made of polymer clay over a solid wood sphere. It reminds me of a chunk of meteor lol!
I used beige clay, iridescent red glass gems, bits of random jewelry. I painted the cured piece with burnt umber acrylic and rubbed on a bit of metallic wax.

Your use of color is very nice.
If you don't mind me asking, do you purchase your cabs online, or in a local shop somewhere? They are lovely, and I am so curious!
Good work indeed.

Thank you! The shiny pieces on this paperweight are actually flat backed glass gems from the craft store. I do have jasper cabs and cabs of other stones in some of my work and those come from a lapidary in China.

redtailhawker [2010-03-13 05:07:51 +0000 UTC]

People ask you about that metallic wax a lot... I think I saw that at Michaels near the Gold-Leafing items; used as a quick way to make an old frame look as if it had been leafed in gold - is this correct?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MandarinMoon In reply to redtailhawker [2010-03-13 05:43:02 +0000 UTC]

You are correct! It comes in a wide variety of finishes such as gold leaf, grecian gold, patina, copper, antique gold, silver leaf and many more. It can be used on many types of surfaces. Here's a link with more info [link]

Cool alien object. 2 questions:
a. Is the bottom flattened to keep it from rolling?
b. What the heck is metallic wax?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MandarinMoon In reply to KwasiRa [2010-03-13 05:10:02 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Thanks

Yes, the wood sphere that it was built around has a flat bottom so it stands stationary....but it could roll if you wanted it to...

I buy small tubes of Rub-n-buff which is a metallic wax you can apply to many different kinds of surfaces and then buff it to a shine. I love it.

KwasiRa In reply to MandarinMoon [2010-03-13 21:48:33 +0000 UTC]

Ah, Rub-n-buff. Good stuff. Never heard it called metallic wax, but I guess that's what it is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MandarinMoon In reply to KwasiRa [2010-03-14 01:31:03 +0000 UTC]

Someone else called it that one time and I looked and that is indeed what it is and it is easier to type LOL!
