Description Just finished the front and back of this blank book. Done in Super Sculpey polymer clay and old jewelry, a watch face, glass gems, agate cabocon and solid brass filigree leaves. I used the watch face to make a dragon's eye in the center. It kind of glows so it is perfect for it.
The clay is still raw and I am curing it now. It is 4am and I will have to finish it after a little shut eye....snore....

I often offer blank journals decorated with polymer clay in my Etsy shop here [link]

After a few disasters, I started baking the polymer clay piece separately and then gluing it to the cover.

Wow that's a good idea, I was just thinking of how it was even possible to bake on something that can burn so easily. XD

Curiously enough, I bake my clay peices on sheets of copy paper. As long as the paper does not touch a hot coil or is exposed to open flame it is fine!

That sounds easier that using about a fourth of a baking pan XD. I've heard of many people using note cards before as well.Β

Is this air dry clay or oven bake clay?Β  If it is oven bake, do you take the metal and glass pieces off? or are they safe to bake?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandarinMoon In reply to xXxSilverFoxxXx [2014-04-07 02:45:52 +0000 UTC]

It is oven bake clay and you can bake the glass and metal right along with the clay.

How will you attach the paper to the journal?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandarinMoon In reply to Chibimita [2013-08-12 23:01:26 +0000 UTC]

On this particular book I cured the clay right on the book wrapping the clay around the edges so as to grip the book when it was cured. I don't recommend this though as some books don't do well when heated!

what kind of books do you use to do these, i love the idea Β and want to try my hand at it if i can

MandarinMoon In reply to destryergirl [2013-08-12 23:05:13 +0000 UTC]

I have switched to curing the polymer clay decorative piece separately and attaching it to the cover with adhesive when it is cool. If you really want to try covering the front and back of a journal like above, I recommend buying a twin wire bound journal with very sturdy covers. I have a tutorial on ClayLessons.com that takes you through the process step by step. Here is a link www.claylessons.com/tutorial/a…
Have fun!

It looks so strange without all the mica powder - it looks like you made it with human skin. Hahahaha! Is this the colour you use on all your bases?

MandarinMoon In reply to monsterkookies [2011-06-25 04:29:40 +0000 UTC]

Ewwww...it DOES look a bit like skin...LOL! This was made with Super Sculpey and I haven't used it in a year or so. I mostly use Premo and Fimo right now. How about you...what brand of clay do you prefer?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

monsterkookies In reply to MandarinMoon [2011-08-01 15:33:52 +0000 UTC]

Premo, for sure... Definitely Premo. I used to use Sculpey when I first started, but quickly moved to Premo.

in fact, it was a very good idea, just that i saw a lot of your works, and all of them had a clock on the eye.
it is good cuz is original, a good way to start a conversation and this only part has a lot of forms to be analized. just think on it like a psicologhyst or like an art analizer
believe me

PD: you could sell it to disney or something like this.
when i saw it i think in two movies too: narnia and harry potter

Not overly so...but for the life of me I can remember how much it weighed.

MalteseLizzieMcGee In reply to MandarinMoon [2010-02-03 07:18:56 +0000 UTC]

I just had visions of people attempting to pick it up and failing to do so. I think polymer clay is a heck of a lot lighter than real clay though, so it proabbly wouldn't be too heavy

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandarinMoon In reply to NyaahNatrix [2009-07-28 21:39:13 +0000 UTC]

This is Super Sculpey and it bakes in the oven at 275 degrees for 15 minutes and then can be sanded, drilled, carved or painted. I really love working with it though I am rather new to it.

So brilliant.

But is the blank booked connected to the clay? What exactly is curing clay?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MandarinMoon In reply to Valethia [2009-03-14 08:28:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
Yes, the clay is covering the front and back cover of the book. To cure, or harden, the clay you put it in the oven at a low temp for 15 minutes. I was really worried that it would catch fire but it didn't...whew!
