Description The first book I made completely from scratch and, therefore, the one I'm still most proud of. Made as a gift for a friend, this book was inspired by the Neverending Story. Hand-sewn, and bound in rich textured bronze paper and trimmed with a serpentine knotwork design.

I've had several enquiries about producing one for sale, and I'm always a bit wary because of the potential copyright issues. But if it weren't for that stern warning at the front of the book about selling it in a different binding, I'd love to create a proper copy of The Neverending Story, the full text and illustrations, in a fantasy binding.

haha omg this textured paper u=you used is practically the same as the one i used for my book today so weird :S , yours is much better but it's my second attempt at making a book, yours is beautiful :'D

Excellent - this kind of paper can crack if you use it on joins. If you paint an extra layer of PVA glue over it, it'll help to reinforce those vulnerable spots.
Keep binding!

I think it split on one corner other than that it seemed okay , it is beautiful paper though , in the process of making a book at the moment just waiting for some glue to dry so i can cut and measure to size a cover , what material do you use to make the covers ?

Usually I'll use 3mm greyboard or 2.5-3mm millboard, depending on what's available at the time. On a few occasions I've padded that with foamboard or foam rubber, to get a nice squishy feel. Most of my bindings are leather, although I've ventured into paper, embroidered fabric, and home-made sheets of silk leaves. If I'm carving or embossing the cover, I'd probably use an inset panel of veg-tanned leather (it's not really suitable for covering the whole book as it's pretty stiff stuff when it's been wetted and shaped) but I've also cut out shapes in greyboard and glued them on in layers, and pressed thin gloving leather into the recesses to give a nice 3d design.

Anything goes, really

Thank you I'm always learning - I still have a long way to go before I can call myself a professional, but I intend to keep working at it!

I thought of the Neverending Story before even reading your description! (: The knotted snakes are awesome!
I really like how shiny and metall-y this book is. Did you make the corner bits yourself, too? Because they are awesome looking.

Thank you! I did make the corner bits - they're art-clay buffed with a metallic wax and then varnished.

That thing is absolutely amazing. O.O certainly a dream come true for any Neverending story fan, like myself. The person who recieved this as a gift was VERY lucky indeed. its absolutely beautiful. i wish i could touch it. XD (as awkward as that may sound)

Thank you , for whom I made the book, is a stunning mask-maker; believe me, I'm the lucky one - she's given me some amazing masks over the years I've known her. Go and be amazed by her creations!

(and there's nothing wrong with wanting to touch a book - handling them is half the pleasure This one has a slightly squishy cover as it's built over millboard padded with a layer of foamboard)

(the actual name slips my mind as of now sinse i havent seen the movie in several months but im sure it'll come to me AS SOON as i submit this comment. lol)

The Auryn I mention it in my book. You can see 's work over at her gallery, or at her website , where her masks are for sale. I own ~counts on fingers~ nine of her masks, so far.

Thank you I wish the internet allowed you to feel textures as well as see images - the best thing about the book is the squishy cover - there's a layer of foamboard under the copper paper, so it's satisfying to give it a squidge.

Thank you! It was a very experimental piece - I'd never sewn pages before, or cased a book in and it was quite scary. I built a sewing frame, having looked at the professional ones and decided that ÂĢ100+ was a little much to pay when I didn't know if I'd be any good at it.. I'm still using the handmade frame now, so it was worth the tenner it cost me to buy wood and screws at the DIY store ~g~

Thank you! I'd seen some fantastic books online, and was intrigued enough to find out how a book is put together. There's something really satisfying about folding and sewing the paper, and watching the whole book forming...

That's so great. I love the art, and you did a really good job with it. I found this hand bound leather book while I was vacationing this summer and fell in love with it, unfortunately there was no indication of who the artists was. It's nice to be able to tell another artist what a good job they've done. :3

And I am still honoured and thrilled to be the owner of your first ever book. It's absolutely stunning, and I have yet to find something worthy to put inside - I am a little afraid of making a total mess of it. I get it out occasionally and just look at it... because I can!
Lovely lovely work.
