Description Some facts:
Despite the almost 70 years that have passed since the second world war, germans are still almost deadly scared to rise their national flag.
The only seen display of it is usually on national buildings like city halls, national treasures, museums and simliar.
In fact, studies showed that not even 30% of all germans would even dare to rise it outside of important sport events. Also, barely 7% of all germans own a german flag. This might also be because of the habit that germans think of people with german flags as racists or patriots and openly avoid them.
The only times where the german flag is shown by most germans is during international sport events or when being on vacations (as beach towel, hat or sewn on the backpack).
In contradiction to almost every other country, most germans don't even raise their flag on days of national importance such as "German Unity Day".

Some more facts:
Since almost no german owns a german flag, a absurd situation came up when the soccer world championship was hosted in Germany. All markets, from super markets to furniture shops and drug stores sold little and big flags to provide the people with german flags since near to no one owned a flag.
Once the championship was over, the trash companies stated that flags worth around 23 million euros had been thrown away.

there's nothing wrong with loving your country and raising it's flag. both Germany and America have been through hell. both countries have had their fair share of racists people and the US still has them today African Americans and so on and our country is more tainted now with Trump as president he's making our country seem more hateful and he's a new Hitler and that's the last thing this country needs.

No country should hide their pride. Be they Germany, Russia, America, or whatever. Yes, that famous American pride has been mostly lost on intellectuals, who can only hear foreigners badmouth their country constantly and the ignorance of their countrymen. Take a tip from an American and put that German flag everywhere in your country and home. If anyone objects, fuck 'em. It's a thing to be proud of. ("fuck 'em" as in ignore them, don't literally fuck them, that would be weird. ._.)

As for your history, don't think too much into it. People make mistakes. Remember it, but only to learn from it. Trust me, Germany is far from the only one with black marks on her history.

Well, seeing that most german-born germans get raised with a "Never forget Nazis, so NONO to flags, the hymn or anything else. Also don't feel proud for this country, it is pretty rich and modern and has a good health system and what do I know, but it had been bad 80 years ago for about 10 years, so ignore that"-attitude while non-german-born germans might actually get raised by parents that are proud of being (part-) german...
Yeah, it is very likely, you are about four times more proud then a average german :'D

Nobody should have to hide their pride because of what happened in the past. I get it, WWII was horrible... but it's in the past. Modern-day Germans have every right to be as proud as anyone else. German history is not just WWII, and it's still a great nation.

We always have a German flag outside our house. The German flag on one side of the porch and the American flag (we live in the US) on the other. My husband and I were both born here, but his family is Austrian and mine is German and English.

Anyhow, more times than I can even remember, German people we know, when first getting to know us, will exclaim "How come you have that German flag in front of your house?!!? Aren't you scared to fly it? We never did that back home!!" They seem truly amazed by seeing the flag flying on somebody's house. And they are also amazed at our Deutschland and Bayern stickers on our car and seem worried that some angry person might vandalize our vehicle. But we've never had a single incident of being vandalized.....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MangaEngel In reply to HelheimsShaman [2014-01-12 01:08:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, in Germany most people expect people with german symbols/flags (without good reason like a sport event or simliar) to be patriots. Patriots are often considered being extrimists in Germany.
And patriotic extremists results in the Neo-Nazi group.
So usually, people in Germany are at least a little bit scared when seeing a german flag out of context on somebodys house, car, etc.
It makes them believe that the person owning that place must be a racist and aggressive neo-nazi.

I can understand, why some people were seriously shocked seeing your house ^_^"
Even though you shouldn't worry too much, it is mostly a thing with Germany. I would only be worried, because many US citizens still seem to think Germany=Nazis and that they might misunderstand your flags for other reasons

HelheimsShaman In reply to MangaEngel [2014-01-12 04:46:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes, my husband lived in Germany for several years and was surprised at how different it was in regards to the patriotism thing than Austria even. I've noticed it too when I've been there (we go each year) and it's easy to see that it all fits in with the fear of National Socialism and being perceived as a National Socialist. Here in the US it does not even matter, since NS is legal anyhow^^

'This might also be because of the habit that germans think of people with german flags as racists or patriots and openly avoid them.' racists? To have pride in what you are? Ok whut. Racism is when your hating on a race. Being proud of being German isn't racism. I'm Prussian as well as German and I am quite proud to be it. As well as patriotic. I may live in America but I love my ancestors. Americans can kiss my arsch if they don't like it.

Well, the thought in Germany is still very strong, that only nazis (the neo-nazis, to be more precise) leave their flag out hanging. And Neo-Nazis are extremly racist, thus giving people the thought "You have a flag? Are you a racist?"

And yay, another prussian person~

I totally realize it.
But then again, living in a country that gets hated from all side by "being that country that killed all those people back then" in a really massive way probably made the germans over-sensitive for anything that might actually confirm those accusations.
Leading to quite weird results, like this.

The difference is that you don't see thousands of people on the internet, in the media and/or real life going to a english person and telling him "You fucking witch hunters, you should just die!".
Because this is pretty much what germans hear regulary whenever Germany does something relevant to the media.

This is a subject I feel so deeply about!! I was so happy to see a few German flags flying around when I went there October-November of last year, but yes, still not enough!! Such a crazy comparison from the time I went to America, when their flag was practically shoved in my face... (Fear not Americans, I do admire your gusto and patriotism.... to a point... )

Germans have SO much to be proud of it's not even funny!! Anything and everything that has to do with engineering here in Australia is made in Germany - such technology and culture they bring to the world!!!

No, I do not agree with what happened during World War 2 at all. I've stood on the railways at Auschwitz, in the gas chamber at Dachau; felt that immense chill and fear of past horrors, and stood in complete dismay of how something of such a scale could happen. But research in Psychology states that we would also follow orders and in doing so commit atrocities such as those seen in World War 2 (see Stanley Milgram's Shock Experiment, and Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Conformity Experiment). We as part of the British Empire fail to remember atrocities committed during our expansion. The pre-colonisation total of native Americans was estimated at 33 million for Mexico and the Andes and 5 million in the US. These numbers dwindled to an America-wide total of 5 million in 1750. Not to mention all those who died as a resultant of the African Slave trade. I wonder how we can still hold our flags so high? For truly all countries have dark pasts they try to hide!
(Some people also fail to remember that not all Germans were Nazis, and that indeed, there were many ethnic Germans kept and killed at Concentration/Death Camps.)

End History student part of rant. I feel sad.... because I own 3 German flags (including one massive one that hangs on my ceiling at home..... Come to think of it, do I even own an Australian flag? Nope?! And: German National Anthem > Australian National Anthem.
(One day I'll move to Europe somewhere, where le history comes from!)

IN ANY CASE; great artwork! A very powerful piece - well done!! ^_^

MangaEngel In reply to xXPharaohKissesXx [2013-05-25 14:27:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for that thought
Germans usually try to avoid hinting on the dark pasts of other countries, because it sounds in our ears like "the Holocaust wasn't THAT bad, look at what X did".
But yeah, most countries have parts that are nothing to be proud of. Be it witch hunting, slaves, massmurder, colonisation or whatever.
And...
Wait, are you austrian? Or british? Are you even european?! I'm confused xD"

"Once the championship was over, the trash companies stated that flags worth around 23 million euros had been thrown away."
That's pretty sad... A national flag is a national flag in the end.

In Poland people raise flags due to national holidays or football championships, but it's not the majority of people. Unfortunately I don't have a flag, partially because I don't own a place, in which I could show it (for example a balcony). But I don't think very well because of that.
