Description I have been drawn (excuse the pun) to photo-realistic drawing by people like phoenirius [link] , taiia [link] , and enednoviel [link] , so here is my first go at it. I wanted to do a movie-star, because it seems to be the big thing to do right now, so I started rifling through my DVDs.

TADA! Here it is!

I used a HB pencil for the outlining and rough shading, and I used 2B and 2H pencils for the final shading. I know there are a couple of things wrong with this, but generally I am happy with it.

Hi again, I like this one, once again you have the look down pat, you have a good eye! Shading can be very easy, just color the area in using pencil strokes close together (as if you are coloring in a book) nice and even, covering the area but not showing any pencil marks going in different directions...try putting down a light layer, blend using a tissue and then another layer...and so on.

Take care and draw each day

I do see what you mean, but I still think you should have taken more time on the skin shading. In your drawing, it seems like there is a very strong light source that renders exposed parts pure white. In the reference picture it is not so. Midtones and shadows are more pervasive. I get the ear now! ^_^ but you should not have picked out the ridges with such a dark line- see how it's faint in the picture? Advice on making the ears relatively level still stands. I wasn't able to compare them side by side, but the first impression I got was that the face in the photograph (dvd box, whatever) was more normal-lookin, less angular, and the hair was longer. *shrugs* It might have helped if you'd made a dark background so you don't have to worry about defining highlighted edges with lines.

fucking huge.. You should shrink it down for us poor people who can't afford broadband. I don't really know what schwarzenegger looks like as I haven't seen him except on FOX news, but I'll critique it based on general anatomy. Sorry.. The first thing that struck me was shape of his ears. The left one looks pointy and kind of shriveled, but the right is just... like it's melded to his cheekbone. And it's not level with the other- that's what's most important. It would be nice if you included a link to the reference picture, because I don't know if he really does look that weird in real life. His nose- you can almost see straight up the nostrils!- seems to me like it's too far up his face and that gives him a primate-ish look. He's Austrian, right? I thought those dudes had hook noses. *shrug* One minor detail: on closer inspection the sunglasses appear to be clamped to the side of his face instead of resting on his ears. O_o It also seems to me like they're not sitting on his face levelly. The shading is nice but I think it's too stark, and the transitions from one value to another are not very smooth. You didn't shade large areas of the skin a uniform light-gray, which makes it hurt my eyes. >< I know that there could have been strong lighting but still.. I think you should buy darker/softer pencils for this kind of drawing. They help you soften the look and generally make it look more realistic. I wasn't able to do a good critique partly because my monitor is too small to contain the full view and my resolution isn't too good on the preview. *dies* Still I hope that it helps you a little.

Some of your comments are useful, thanks, but some should be editted after viewing the image I used as a base. See linky: [link]
