I recently bought the Travellers RPG core rules book and needed a sci fi character. So I dug out an old one I haven’t used for a while. A major retcon is needed but I think she’ll work.
The rules for travelers, the second edition by Mongoose, look pretty good. Its a space opera game that isn’t Star Wars or 40k so it might actually be fun.
