Description This is one of my oldest oc. He's born from my love for Beatrix Potter's character Jeremy Fisher and, appearance-wise, from the frontman of a Japanese underground band I used to listen to a lot. I refer to him as "the king of the swamp" because he doesn't have a name yet. He's obviously not entirely human, he has frog-like skin, hands and feet, though you can't see the feet since he has shoes

Tools: watercolor and a tiny bit of white gouache, white gel pen, and colored pencils.

Such a gorgeous, emotive illustration! I can literally feel the movement of the water and the breeze caressing the reeds and grass. The colors of the sky are fantastic as well. Very dreamy!

I could never have imagined a drawing from this point of view, this has opened so many avenues.

Interesting perspective! I also really like the colours; there's a lot of green, but you contrast it nicely with the pink flowers, the characters' clothing and the sky! I also really like your shading on the grass/bush on the side.

Yes, I wanted to draw something different, I try to challenge myself every time I do a new painting, especially when it comes to the scenery

Maybe the awkwardness gives them their uniqueness. I think they're very well excecuted and have their own style, if you know what I mean. The grass/ bush on the sides look very difficult to paint. Did you do a lot of planning beforehand? I mess up my grasses lots of times; they'll look more like randomly placed stripes.

Edit; this was meant as a reply to our previous converstation; sorry.

No I didn't do a lot of planning, as you can see  I loosely sketched the grass, it's very messy  , I usually paint grass without really drawing it, I feel like it's better to let the colors do the job. I keep in mind where I want to place the shadows and I try to see the grass more like "waves" or a unified thing that moves with the wind, sorry I'm not sure how to explain it in a better way   Once I know where I want it to go, I start to paint.

Unfortunately I can't see the link you added. But I get the point. I find it very difficult to paint grass or bushes loosely. It always looks forced or just a plain mess. Thanks for explaining though, I might experiment with it (again) soon. The best part of art is that one is never finished learning. Have a nice evening, if you're on my side of the planet.

I need to find another place to post pictures, I don't understand why it doesn't work  I agree, the learning process is never-ending and the best part is that we can only improve!

Aw, this is so beautiful! And he seems like a dreamer and hopeless romantic! And although I'd probably freak out in real life the froggies are adorable  !     Lovely job!!

Thanks a lot!  I guess frogs in real life are not very well-liked   When I was a kid I used to play with frogs a lot, so I have a soft spot for them. I even like toads I find them cute

Your Welcome  ! And that's cool how you used to play with them, I don't know why the creep me out. At a distance I'm fine, and I do think there kinda cute, but once they get too close  !

Maybe because they jump and they're clammy? My dad doesn't like them at all, when he was a kid he had to wake up at dawn to go to the orchard (he was a farmer) and the toads jumped in the dark scaring him to death

OhMyGosh, Your Poor Dad!! I'd have no clue what I'd do if I was in the same situation, cause the way they jump is the worse  .

Absolutely stunning! I love it. How long did you work on this?

Manuela-M In reply to JettieHier [2016-05-01 09:56:07 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!   If I count in the layers drying time (I tend to avoid using the dryer, since it lifts the pigments) it took around 10 hours.

Manuela-M In reply to JettieHier [2016-05-08 08:38:06 +0000 UTC]

The sky is a simple gradient wash so it's quick to do, the more tedious part was painting the waterlilies, it was also my first time drawing them so they turned out a bit awkward
