STORY

As winter lingered on, there was no stopping the work that needed to be done on the estate. Snow lay thin on the ground and the air was frosty, but everyone just bundled up and kept on going. It came at a price, of course, as fingers became numb and toes lost all feeling, and catching your hands on buckles and straps hurt even more.

Connie's fingers were like blocks of ice as she led Solar from his stall. There was no rest for the wicked, and the stallion needed his daily exercise. As she got him into the aisle, he suddenly stopped and refused to move, turning his head to her and nipping at her coat gently. “What?” she asked, confused, as he guided her hand by pulling at her sleeve. She took his guidance and placed her hand against his shoulder, and then his markings started to glow.

Aithne had told her that Solar hadn't shown much of his power since he had arrived at Firelight. He had nearly set fire to his trailer on arrival, but after that he had been pretty subdued. She had mused that maybe he would do more once bonded. Now, Connie felt warmth seeping into her fingers. It wasn't the usual kind of warmth one would get from putting a hand on a horse, but a bone-deep, soothing sensation that spread through her veins right up her arms.

“You're such a good boy,” she said with a small laugh as she placed her other hand on his flank and rubbed gently. She wondered why he was deciding to show more of his power now, and watched his face carefully as he watched her. It felt like the heat was creeping right through to her core, beyond her very being and into something more abstract. “Wow,” she breathed as she felt Solar's very presence settle in her.

It was like there was a sudden connection between them. In her mind it was as if she could feel his emotions and thoughts at the edges, wrapping her up and surrounding her. There was nothing specific, just feelings and fuzzy images. “It's a bond,” a voice said behind her. She started a little and turned her head to look at the source. Lee was there, sat in his wheelchair. She had been so enthralled with Solar that she hadn't heard him approaching.

“Do you think so?” she asked, looking back to the stallion's calm face.

“Yeah. I've seen enough of them,” he muttered, wheeling himself over. He had become much more mobile over the last week and Connie had seen him wandering around quite a lot.

“Why now?”

“I suppose he just felt like it was the right time,” Lee said with a shrug as he stopped near Solar's head and reached out to rub the stallion's nose.

Connie smoothed her hand up over Solar's neck slowly, thoughtfully. Aithne had said it looked like Solar would bond to her, but if she was honest she hadn't expected it. It was never something she had even considered. She believed in souls, and in deep connections, but to feel something so strong with a horse was incredible. “Were you bonded?” she asked softly. Lee fell silent for a long moment before he responded.

“Yeah. We were.” His hands dropped back into his lap and Solar's nose followed them, nudging them gently to coax some more petting.

“You wanna watch this practice? I could use some pointers,” Connie said as she took up the reins in her hand. Lee lifted his eyes to look at her for a long moment before he nodded slowly.

“Sure, I'll meet you down there.”

Connie hopped onto Solar's back outside the stable block and rode him down to the arena. He felt different beneath her, like she barely had to use any aids other than her mind to make him do things. It was as if, now the connection was open between them, anything was possible. Communication was so easy and there was a harmony between them.

They warmed up as they waited for Lee and he soon appeared at the fence with Aisha. Connie cantered over and then halted nearby, giving Solar a good pat on the neck. “He feels so different now,” she said brightly as she ruffled his mane.

“The bond allows you to communicate on a totally different level,” Lee explained as he sat back in his chair. Connie watched as Aisha's hand move to rest on his shoulder. “Learning how to use it is hard, though. That's why Spirit Horse riders aren't exactly unstoppable in competitions. It's all about synchronisation, and clearing your mind to communicate better. Give yourself over to the bond completely, let him in, and it'll be so much better.”

Connie nodded and let out a long breath that came out as mist as she closed her eyes. Let him in. Give herself over. Maybe she could do that. She relaxed her shoulders and tried to relax her mind, attempting to clear it of any clutter. Almost immediately she felt Solar's presence press forwards, mixing with her own. It was bizarre, but it was pleasant.

The rest of her session she worked on keeping her mind open and working with Solar on a totally different level. He was more responsive, but if she lost concentration then their connection would slip and errors would be made. Lee was still impressed with their progress, however, and he offered to help her again in the future.
