Description

‘What is, is what must be’

“There is not a day or night but a doe offers her life for her kittens, or some honest captain of Owsla his life for his Chief Rabbit’s. Sometimes it is taken, sometimes it is not. But there is no bargain, for here, what is, is what must be.”

This makes me think and I don't like it. ... just kidding. It has that certain charm to it.. reminds me a bit of the God-bunny animations in Watership Down.

- Hunt then, - Ligadema said. - But remember prey has its own gods, who are no lesser than the very gods you worship; feed on the prey but remember that your body will feed it too in time.

I’m just breath-taken. The symbolism here is just stunning (I’m an absolute sucker for symbolism). I love the concepts life and death here. The Elil, of course, as mentioned in Watership Down, only hunt to survive. The death of the rabbits means life not only to them, but to also they new life they give birth to.

I think what I love best about this is the combination of ancient influences on your art: Asian, Norse (well, duh) and even a little Native American. All melded with the theme from Richard Adams' best-known (and best-loved) masterpiece.

I was just staring absently at this while taking in all the beautiful details, thinking about Watership Down, and it occurs to me that I've read a few other "speaking animals with their own culture have adventures in the wild" books but they've all been about hunting animals. Watership Down is the only one I can think of that invites us to contemplate the lives of creatures that are not only not at the top of the stepped pyramid of the food chain, but actually fairly close to its base. It's fascinating and I continue to be very glad it exists.
