And thus we have the layout of this valley established: Sirgale, in the basin, where the fire dogs pace and the fire cadets lace up heavy boots before dawn breaks; the blackbird clan, in the northern foothills, where the kindred cats sleep and the crows circle down and the children whisper stories in the dancing lantern light.
Inside the city of Sirgale tension with the Blackbird clan grew greater every year. Within the fiery walls the people knew nothing of the beauty and lives of the god children. They called them Cíobair, Death Shepherds, inhuman and evil. They told stories of the clashes between the groups throughout history, the ability of the god children to raise unnatural creatures from the depths. They saw them only as flickering lights along the crest of the ridge, a sunset mirage, the demons of the dusk.
