Maran-Zelde β€” Anti-character torture stamp

Description I'm not totally opposed to making characters suffer. If it furthers the plot, sometimes it's necessary. And suffering can make a character's ultimate victory that much sweeter.

What I don't like is fanfiction and fanart that serves only to torment a certain character, never giving them a break or win. Whether it's done to bash a character, or done by a self-proclaimed "fan" who "likes to see the character suffer so they can feel sorry for him or her," I still don't like it.

ETA since people brought it up: I don't mind hurt/comfort either, as long as the story is balanced.

People need to stop torturing Naruto Uzumaki.

Speaking about character torture, I used to imagine torturing MLP characters.

I'm side-eyeing the Undertale fandom here. Seriously, I love you guys, and you can produce some really great content, but sometimes the endless ~edgy~ and grimdark 'we're gonna make this specific character (usually Sans) suffer through nonstop agony and we say it's for plot reasons but really we just like seeing them in pain' AUs can get a bit tiring sometimes.

Personally, it depends on whether they deserve it or not. But don't let it consume your whole life.

So true. I really hate when people just draw characters tormenting another character for the sake of the artist/writer's pleasure.

I mean, the Johnny Test hatedom is really infamous for having thier favorite characters killing Johnny. Same goes to the MLP hatedom. Another issue with character torture is that it goes against the character's personality. Unless it's an actual parody, if you have a character hurting another character that in reality, they would get along well, your basically implying you don't know your favorite character well, like this meme I saw with Pinkie saying she hates the Minions, when REALLY, she would enjoy them.

Do you mean the weird fetish torturing?

Or do you mean the other way?(like making the character's mom die in front of your character, killing off a character them character loves)

Maran-Zelde In reply to shadowthedork [2015-03-15 13:55:27 +0000 UTC]

A little of both. Making the character's parent die can be all right as long as it serves a greater purpose, like a Death=Redemption theme, or if it's necessary to push the plot or character in a certain direction. But if it's a love story and one of the love interests dies, I don't usually like that, because it seems like a cheap way to play with the readers' emotions.

i always found the whole idea of such a topic as something ridiculous, if you are a fan of something then why would you want to torture thing's you claim to be a fan of. Even though it's not a real person it's still insulting to a fan base as well the original writer or artist of whatever franchise you are insulting.

if the person wants to see something suffer so they can feel sorry for it then the person clearly ever feels like they have a lack of control in there actual lives (the same mindset of an actual rapist) or they simply have sadistic tendencies in which case they put themselves before what they claim to be a fan of and therefor are nothing but hypocrites because they don't care about a fan base which they claim to be a part of.Β

Thank god somebody made a stamp of this. I've disliked characters in the past, everyone has, but I never went so far as to include them in torture fanfics/fanart. They're nothing more than ideas created on paper with pencil, ink and paint, not a personal attack against a fan's interests and beliefs. The extreme anti-character stuff is always the worst part of every fandom for me.

I don't like this kind of treatment either. Whether it's for "Hurt/Comfort" or character bashing, this is just plain immature and more art/writing should be dedicated to the characters a person loves instead of focusing on hate.

I don't mind hurt/comfort as long as the story is light on the hurt and heavy on the comfort. But yeah, character bashing sucks.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

MangaOtakuTB15 [2011-09-03 17:24:28 +0000 UTC]

Considering their physical and emotional traits come from REAL people, that would be like saying you want those types of humans to die when you pretty much put character torture (I mean for stupid reasons like bashing and all. Agnst and Hurt/comfort fics are okay) in the picture.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

SimpleBend [2011-08-11 04:54:52 +0000 UTC]

I actually like to torture my characters. I think Angst/Hurt/Comfort is a very difficult thing. Making a balance, delivering it correctly, I'm always striving for that. I'm also very prone to inner monologue and graphic detail. I think I want to practice mainly.. But I'm not sure if I'm overdoing it.

On the fandom part, bashing characters is so annoying. I can understand people if they don't like X, but saying a character deserves to die, drawing him being beaten by Mary Sue OCs. I can't stand it. Also nowadays EVERYTHING is overrated: Twilight, Naruto, Jhonen Vasquez, Ponies, Sanity, Hetalia, etc, etc. Geez, people are unpleasable...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Maran-Zelde In reply to SimpleBend [2011-08-13 01:51:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I agree. I don't mind hurt/comfort as long as there's enough comfort to balance out the hurt.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

DrStarchild [2011-07-02 23:28:56 +0000 UTC]

Well usually the point is in hurt-comfort... breaking a character's barriers down sufficiently to make him admit his feelings, or show affection for another character he isn't meant to be paired with romantically. It's kinda interesting how for certain characters a bad dream is enough, while others are so stoic and manly that have to be tortured to the edge of death before they'll consent to give each other a hug! XD (take Mr Spock for example).

I agree there's no point in hurt without the comfort though. I especially can't read pure psychological torture without what you call a "win" at the end. It just leaves me depressed along with the character.

Maran-Zelde In reply to DrStarchild [2011-07-04 15:27:00 +0000 UTC]

Hurt/comfort is fine, as long as the comfort isn't delayed too long.

DrStarchild In reply to DrStarchild [2011-07-02 23:33:03 +0000 UTC]

comments show a lot of variation of interpratation... I was thinking of fanfiction, and of nice characters. There is certainly no point in torturing a not nice character unless you want the reader to start feeling sorry for him. or if there's a very good reason, see the woman who gets her eye ripped out in Kill Bill.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

TomorrowsArchon [2011-05-21 14:05:03 +0000 UTC]

I usually do so for plot purposes, with a justifiable outcome in the end.

People would probably overdo it and use it to kill off several characters for "herp derp, realism!", cause you know, your character is a Mary Sue if he/she/it didn't die yet or anything like that. Something idiots would say really.

And I speak of an original story btw.

Prescription-Fractal [2011-03-10 00:44:07 +0000 UTC]

Completely agree. I put my characters (both original and fan-canon...the word escapes me for using canon characters) through the ringer in stories, but I don't abuse them for the hell of it, or just throw torture after torture in a cheap bid for audience sympathy. They work hard against unjust circumstances, and win or lose, they get something out of it, or the bad guys lose something from it (depending on exactly how the bad guys are defined).

In alot of my stories(mostly the ones about animals)the main characters and supporting characters are horribly tormented by people, because most of my stories are about animal abuse and pollution. And,throughout most of my work,I express the evil of humans and the importance of enviromental safety. Every one of the stories I've written teach these lessons.
So,I guess my kind of torture is necessary?
