This is really beautiful! I love the use of colors. In the background is that more fields or is it a lake?

Fields fields!

And thank you! Ahah blue is a lovely color but I have no clue why the reference photo made the grass blue.. something with the light and perhaps also flowers? Perhaps the ref photo is simply too saturated!

Yeah, the original image is very saturated. Still pretty though.

Wow! This piece is amazing & going into my favorites for sure ^_^. The warm yellows & pinks fading into blues & purples beautifully illustrate the sunset. The highlights along the creature’s body (I hesitate to say “horse”) clearly & beautifully illustrate the light source. This is probably my favorite part of this piece. You really demonstrate an advanced understanding of light sources. I reviewed the character info as well. You really did your research & it shows! You seem to have done a very good job of staying true to the character as far as I can see, which is incredibly important when drawing one that belongs to someone else. You put your own spin on illustrating it in this piece, but it is still clearly the same character. One thing that you seem to be missing are the long fangs protruding from his mouth in the owner’s art & collections of art featuring him. That being said, this is a really beautiful piece &, unlike other drawings of other artists’ characters which I’ve seen, Angelus looks like he belongs here. This looks like one finished, complete piece instead of a drawing of a character plopped into a stunning landscape.

Great job!!

Thanks so much for your outrages long comment! <3 Makes me very very happy ;D Super cliche to say that, but it's true x3
Haha the creator of the creature terms the species "ballator". I understand your hesistance to call it a horse

The light on the horse was quite tough to do. I fiddled around with it for quite some time. It helped that the reference photo also had a horse in it - so I could study how the light hit that horse. Ah good to know that you believe I stuck to the design of the creature! I didn't hear any comments from its creator, so I hoped it was fine. Did I forget the fangs? Oh I'll check that out and add it when i add the longer shadow for the creature! Very very well spotted, thank you!! You have a keen eye!

Many hugs to you!

I'm really glad you liked it. It was really hard to come up with 200+ words  So, I'm glad that you found what I said useful/helpful especially since you never heard anything from the creator  . I went over your drawing with a fine toothed comb lol. But know that I would only do that for something that I liked. If I hadn't liked your work I wouldn't have put that effort into commenting on it.

Thanks for the comments on my photos ^_^
Keep up the good work.

Hey there from Project comment  !
I really love this piece Congrats
A very beautiful color pallette, the colors are well chosen for this moment, the sky is awesome painted. One thing you should improve on is the shadow underneath Angelus and the mountains/hills on the background; add more texture and reflection into the water.
The colors are perfectly balanced, the picture itself gives a realistic feeling I think you should improve more on this technique.

What can I say, your artwork is fascinating, I love it and keep up the good work

Hey ScarletAlpha, thanks so much for your lovely comment! Makes me blush <3

Yes I will definitely change the shadow, good to know that so many people agree on that

Sorry, you're the second person that thinks its water and hills. They're actually trees and a meadow (with perhaps blue flowers, or just the light, dunno it's in the reference photo).

Lots of hugs to you and a big thank you again! Enjoy your week

While checking out the notifications, I saw journal from ProjectComment  and God, my jaw dropped. Honestly, this piece is so good! I love the color palette and the details of the beast. The technique is also amazing, you made a digital drawing look like an actual painted piece (I have no idea how to do that, honestly ;-; ) I really adore how the clouds and mountains are drawn too.
I already saw somebody commenting that they think that the shadow is too short. I agree with that. The other parts of the shadows/lighting are really detailed though, just like the rest of the piece.
Overall- amazing piece! I can just hope to reach this level in drawing one day

(Had to edit it because I have to idea how to link stuff here, oops)

I was uber lucky in finding that reference photo. When I saw it I was: omg that photo has so many pretty colors in it.. I loved it and just had to draw it. Or attempt to! hihi Good to know you also agree with the shadow, I may change it!

Just continue to enjoy drawing, practice and you'll definitely get there! Oh and don't worry about editing - I can't see that you edited the comment ^^

Hello from ProjectComment !

1 word - wow. As soon as I saw the icon I knew I gotta click on this and boy I was not disappointed.
Absolutely beautiful color palette. You truly paid respect to sunset/sunrise colors, not a single color swatch stands out as in "ew this does not belong here". Perfectly balanced contrast between warm and cold colors. It's like - everything is blending together from top to bottom. Sky looks amazing, then the purple tones touch the mountains - very well done with making further mountains appear brighter, then mixing some pink hues into the water, then the grass and the purple speckles in the lawn. And even the character has some pink colors in it!
I love what you did with the cooler colors, since there are no direct sun reflections in the water, this shows a really late morning/evening time, my favourite... It's magic. Also the bushes on the right are just perfect. Quick strokes make them look like they are flickering in the wind, moving.
Also really noticeable - well done highlights on the creature, only where the sun would hit it from the side like it is in reality.

The only noticeable criticism that I could say, is that the shadow under a beast should be MUCH longer, as it's so small when the sun is high in the sky. Here, you absolutely bravely could add a shadow that extends to the bottom of the picture Would add some mystery flavor!

Overall I'm in love. I love the quick strokes and the colors of the picture. WELL DONE!!

Hey Mahogi! Omg thanks so much for your long comment and advice. Super awesome that you took so much time for me! <3

It totally helped having a reference for the colors! I tried to go along with everything there. Hihi they're not mountains I think - they're trees. The light hits them from behind and apparently something like this is what you get - followed the reference But I agree they also look like mountains hehe. Rofl there's also no water~! I think you mean the grassland before the forest But hey! I love that as well <3

Oef it was quite tough to get the light right on  pancakebossart101 's OC. I'm super happy to hear you think it worked out! Ahah yes the shadow should be longer... I actually drew a long shadow at first, but then changed it as it looked weird. shoud've stuck with my instincts!

Uber uber thank you to you for such an amazing comment!

Oh good god I messed up like half of the picture xD
The "water" grassland looks SO flat, like the surface of the water, so, whoops xD
Yeah, I think the colors really worker out amazing everywhere, I loved this. Already stalked the character Angelus also to figure out his colors xD
And yay, welcome and happiness!!

Hi from ProjectComment  !

This is one beautiful, picturesque scene ! I really love the sky and mountains in the background and the fantastic color balance and composition that gives the scene a realistic, three-dimensional feel. I also like the design of your horse, and how its eerie appearance causes it to simultaneously be at odds with, yet at harmony with, its surroundings (ex. it doesn't look like an ordinary horse, yet is similarly affected by/blending in with nature). This is one of those paintings that I can imagine hanging up on my wall .

Now, for the nitpicking...

I think that the level of detail you put in the sky/mountain is appropriate for this piece, and the details of the plants behind the horse are nice as well. However, the way you drew the grass is something that I'd expect for a feature that's out of focus and in the mid-ground or further back. I was expecting at least a few crisp, sharp blades of grass in the front. The abstracting away of these details take away from the realism of the piece, especially since the plants in the mid-ground are sharper-looking and more realistically lit than the grass.

I also suggest either blending some of your strokes in the mid-ground foliage (the left ones) a bit more or adding more strokes to the foliage to make it look more realistic. The plants on the right are really well-drawn, your use of multiple, thin strokes have the effect of making the grass look more detailed. However, the shorter and thicker strokes on the left side stand out and are somewhat distracting - some of the strokes are bent in a way that grass wouldn't ordinarily bend, and this again takes away from the realism of the piece. I'd suggest using thinner strokes that taper at the ends, and use individual strokes for more of the grass blades.

Overall, I think that you did an amazing job on this piece, and hope that you will continue to make more awesome works .

Hope this helps, and best of luck in the contest!

OMG Bluediscord, your comment is fantastic!! Thank you so much for taking so much time to analyze my art so closely It helps me improve <3

First of all the design of the horse - the credits all go  pancakebossart101  - it's her OC. I picked a background that would go along with the pink in the horses design
Ahaha you caught me. The grass was one of the last things I drew - and I tried to draw it a few times - bit too lazy - and it didn't work. I realized that I'd had to draw a lot of individual grass strands and in the photo reference the grass was rather blurry. I didn't know how to approach it so i "solved it" by adding the dots - supposed to be flowers. Super good that you point that out!

Hmm yes I thought about blending the pink foilage a bit -- same case with the grass - I didn't know how to draw it realisitcally + next time I'll get a better photo reference I actually blended it but then you couldn't really discern what it is. Your suggestion of simply using a thinner brush and pay more attention to the bends... thanks!

Your comment is very very much appreciated! <3

Oh my god! I love the bright colors of the sky!! It so makes a good scenario for the whole thing. The colors of the ground are so beautiful you did a lovely job. I don't know what kind of animal that is but it looks like its drawn differently than everything else, not that it looks bad, it looks good to. Nice job. I hope to see more work from you💋💋😊and sorry if you didn't like the huge message, it's a thing for ProjectComment i really like how this piece fits so well. See you. Later

Vivianna thank you so much for your comment, I totally like your huge message ;D Hmm yes it was difficult to make the character blend in (it's a type of horse OC from the contest holder - the species are called ballator) I'm glad it worked out quite ok - but it could use a bit more

Marawyn In reply to BronzeHeart92 [2017-09-11 19:21:50 +0000 UTC]

Interesting question! I think DA is great, but it has its drawbacks - like any other thing. I love that I've met people who inspire me and I've made a couple of good, close friends. It's not easy finding the people you may call friends - also maybe because many people just love to chill, fav stuff, comment shortly and move on. I prefer in depth conversations And DA is endless.. you can browse on and on.. which is great for inspiration but it's difficult to start managing your time spent on DA. Eventually you'll have to make hard decisions I think on who to watch back and who not.

How do you feel about DA? :3
