Description A commission of a kitten who was tragically hit by a car. ;_; This is the first of two memorial commissions for the same client, both of cats.

Size: 16 x 20
Media: Charcoal and graphite
Status: Commission; sold

I have never seen fixatiff destroy tonal ranges as badly as the kind I used on here. I had to go back in and revive the black, but I lost of lot of my lights that I can't reclaim...I may pick up a white conte in town and see if that won't do something for it.

Beautiful work!!! I love the softness of this and it's a wonderful memorial piece.

Just out of curiosity - what brand/type of fixative did you use? I've never had a problem with fixative doing that, but want to make sure I avoid any types that do.

Thanks!....Ah, dang. I'm at work, so I can't go look...it's new stuff, not in fact the "Fixatiff" brand I'm used to (despite the fact that I call everything that, like kleenex. XD) I'll let you know, though, when I check. It's a permanent sealent rather than a workable one, and that has made all the difference, I think...>_>

You are most welcome!

Well, if you happen to remember the name of that permanent sealer, please share - I know I probably would like to avoid if possible. I use a workable fixative, but use it more as a permanent fixative since I only apply it after I'm completely done.

I really hate fixative, it always seems to mess thing up one way or another... usually with me, it kills all the white/light tones.

Having said that this is a gorgeous piece. I understand you wanted more contrast but the limited tonal range here seems to really suit the piece especially since it's a memorial picture. Like an old faded, treasured photo kind of feel... do you know what I mean? I'm crap at articulating myself LOL
cats are such a pain to get right but you nailed it I think, I love her shape and the expression - cat faces are so difficult to make look convincing, but she does have that young cat look.

it's a really lovely drawing, and very fitting.

Thanks! Let's hope the commissoner likes it, too. And I had to redo the face, so I am glad it looks right now. XD Cat faces are hard, yes....o_O
