You first have to give the darker colour as underpaint, then you "glaze" over and over with brighter (and more diluted) colours until you get to the colour you want, without cover completely the brown/black shadows.
I use an old brush to tap some sort of fur before adding the details with coloured pencils (note: the pencil can be done only on wooden panel, otherwise you should use very diluted paint with smaller brushes)
