Description This is the second set of progress pictures. Now that I have constructed the uppers I will pull them over the foot form (last) and leave them be for a time so that the leather sets to the shape of the form.

First you see the floopy upper beside the last. Also, there's a view of the underside of the insole, showing the rib that I cut out which I will sew the upper to. I've also cut a portion of the upper out to reduce bulk in the toe and heel and then I glued the two layers together. Next I position the upper on the last and begin pulling it over the last and tacking it down with small nails. You can see a view of what the shoe looks like half way through lasting, where it's not quite pretty yet.

Then I finish lasting the toe and heel and make sure the sides are nice and snug. You can see how I made several pleats in the toe and I did the same in the heel.

Finally, the lasting is finished and you can see how the shoe will look when it's finished (I still have to actually sew the upper onto the insole and then sew on the sew and the heel bits) Take a look at how just a bit of practice will make a difference, the toe on the left was the one I did first and the one on the right second. The pleats are alot more evenly spaced.

I think I will do one more progress shoot before I finish the shoes...

looking good! Typically snazy design (your stuff always is). What's the leather for the uppers?

I used an oil tanned leather (chrome tanned that is treated after tanning so it has an oily feel and is waterproof)

Great! I'm always glad to inspire ^.^ if you can aquire the tools and materials to do it (I got my specialty tools off of ebay) I definitely recommend it. I think this is one of my most satisfying projects yet, especially since I'm sewing the shoe by hand and all, and that it's actually turning out to be a rather professional looking piece too, just by the nature of the process.

ahh! Ebay! I hadn't thought of that! xD
finding working leather tools around here it's reeeaaally difficult, most of the people who like "professionaly" works with leather and stuff orders them from abroad

but yep, this looks really professional (though I think one could say that about all your leather work xD) I hope to see it finished soon

Yes, that is a really good place. The best part is probably that you can find old tools, back when they made them properly, with wooden handles and all.

They fit your style I gotta say
But they don't look like shoes I'd like to wear, but oh well! I can't make shoes so I'll be stuck till I learn it!
How did you learn all the steps and stuff?
I mean.. you don't just go to Wikipedia, search for "shoe making", read stuff and go all like shown above!
Because it turned out amazingly so far, looking very good!

Well, there are actually some really good shoemaking tutorials on youtube And I got a book from shoemakingbook.com that goes through the whole process.

Ah I see... wow... and where did you get that wooden feet where you attach the leather on?
I might aswell search for tutorials on youtube... it seems like some people actually upload good stuff on there

And I'm actually using a plastic last, much more common these days as plastic can be shaped with an machine hooded up to a CAD program and wooden lasts are made by hand = much more expensive. Anyway, I got mine from my school but I did a search online for lasts and came up with a few sites that sell them in various sizes and shapes.

Oh okay thanks!
Especially for mentioning the website!
Did look like wood, but yeah, I can imagine that plastic is more common and not that expensive~
