Thanks! Yeah, the horns are the part I worry about the most when going to and from cons. If the helmet ever got damaged it would be over.Β

All the hard armor bits are really just a totally random mix of materials. They all start out as nothing but paper towels and masking tape, to get the base shapes. Then it's just layering up with ducktape, poster board and craft foam to give it thickness and finish out the shaping. Then paper mache and gesso to finish the surface and add the details. Then it's painted and a few cast resin gems are added. . . but yeah, I sort of just lucked into the process? I've had to tear a few pieces a part when they don't fit right and reshape them, but all in all I love it. It's really light weight but it's nice and solid.

if you're ever interested in trying out some more durable methods:Β www.therpf.com/replica-movie-c...
All my costumes I try to make "LARP grade" so they can take a bit of abuse. Β my dA gallery is woefully sparse regarding my costume work...
one of these days I'll create an account over on Transcostumers...Β z4.invisionfree.com/transcostu...

One day I'd like to remake the armor out of something I wont' be afraid of transporting. Though it's already taken quite a beating, four conventions and countless times I've rammed right into doorways cause I'm not used to my expanded clearance. Worst damage I've suffered so far, is cracking loose a spike on one gauntlet but it was easy enough to secure. Though, I'll have to wait till I'm really FINISHED with her before I consider a version 2. Every con I'm changing bits, or adding parts I think I'm almost happy with her.Β
I just don't know what would be the best thing to remake her out of, I don't have a lot of experience with 'professional' materials, nor do I have a good work space. Everything's just done in my kitchen. Β
Thanks for the links though, I'll definitely be checking them out!

if it were me... I'd design the helmet and armor parts in Sketchup, export the files so they could be loaded into pepakura (www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en⦠and "unfold" the model. Print out the templates and copy onto cardboard (www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbDXid⦠. Assemble the pieces using hotglue to hold it together and cover with several layers of resin to harden it on the outside (www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YaWJ-⦠, www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uIl7j⦠and but a bit of fibermesh w/ the resin inside to further strengthin it... then some foam layers inside for comfort, and on to bondo and sanding, painting, etc.
I've wanted to make a transformers costume for AGES now.. one day I will... Β Of course if I ever do.. it's going to be BIG.. to that will limit me to local cons only, me thinks.
