I guess a simple start is don't add black/gray to make a shadow colour, but make it colder instead (like add blue)
You might already know this, but it's a very common mistake I see people make
Also I think it's a terrible idea to use burn or dodge to shade (I use luminosity/colour dodge/linear dodge layer mode instead and paint with a very light colour, like pink or orange, blue etc. , (not white!) but I only do this for a few tiny highlights, the rest is just regular)
