Backstory:
River Diamond, a.k.a River, is son of Blue Diamond and Calvin, a rich Monster Machine business truck. At his birth and his mother’s death, he was abandoned by his so-called father Calvin and left under an oak tree. Luckily, Flame, who had been best friends with Calvin, found him and took him and his twin cousin, Thunder Diamond, son of his mother’s sister gem Yellow Diamond and her husband Flame, to Homeworld. White Diamond welcomed them all into the palace, and he and Thunder were raised there. At their arrival, White created a Pearl called Green Pearl, who served as the twins’ caretaker as they grew.
Many gems welcomed him and Thunder, but there were those who didn’t. They rebelled against the Diamonds and threatened to shatter them. River grew into battle, his mother’s powers of tears being useful to soften up gems to poof them away and/or help sad gems by evaporating his tears and turning them into clouds with the power to make anyone laugh.
As son of the infamous Blue Diamond, he and his powers were feared. Unlike his twin cousin, however, he was undeniably soft and sensitive, to his gems, to his family, to anyone and everyone, especially to Green Pearl, whom he had grown fond with since he and Blue Pearl were his only company when everyone else was busy, and to his twin cousin Thunder. This had not only caused his fellow gems to adore him, but also caused the rogue gems to despise him more.
By age 10, however, he was shattered and killed by a Rogue Amethyst and a Rogue Jasper after he, Green Pearl and Blue Pearl were cornered in his room after his loyal gems were all poofed. Blue Pearl had called the others while Green Pearl cradled his shattered gem and corpse.
When White and Spinel was able to finally fix his gem and bring him back to life, however, he was horrified to learn that his twin cousin had fled Homeworld because of his death. After a breakdown and a rest, River too had fled Homeworld, with Green Pearl following behind him to make sure he was okay.
He went to Earth and managed to track down his fraternal grandmother Diana, whom he told everything to, and lived with her for a few years. He had changed his name to Crusher during his stay, shifting his form from his gem form to his Monster Machine form. He had advised Green Pearl to do the same, and Green Pearl changed his name to Pickle and shifted into a Monster Machine form before using his own magical powers to make a family that looked exactly like his Monster Machine form.
By age 13, Calvin had found out that he was on Earth and sent out the police to arrest him for being an “estranged alien ‘acting’ as his ‘dead’ son”. River and Green Pearl fled and hid out in Axle City. River hid himself from Homeworld and from Calvin, forcing himself to change his attitude from soft and sensitive to egomaniacal and insensitive. He became a racer, a cheating racer, to win the races and keep himself occupied.
By age 16, he met his new rival named Blaze, along with his driver AJ. They didn’t get along much, but it didn’t really stop him and Green Pearl from getting to know the two discreetly. The other racers liked Blaze and AJ, which meant River had to play the bitter truck and act annoyed by the sudden lack of attention.
On his 18th birthday, as he did with his other birthdays, he celebrates with Green Pearl in their apartment. After he sends out Green Pearl to get some balloons while he set up for his own birthday party, he learns that he and Blaze have the same birthday, like he and Thunder used to have.
Totally Coincidental, right?
He allows Green Pearl to head to Blaze’s birthday party, even if it meant that he had to celebrate his birthday alone this year. He spends the rest of the day in his gem form, crying and remembering the times he had with his twin cousin.
Meanwhile, Green Pearl returns with cake and hands it to River then he goes into the bathroom and screams after finding out who Blaze really was.
And after realizing that it was gonna be a LONG ride until they both figure out the truth…
