Description The left one is a either a swordfish or a sailfish. The right one is a cellar spider. No names, they're just showcases of species.

Wolves, ponies, cats, hedgehogs, etc, etc...

People who make characters tend to favor the same exact species. I do my best not to be guilty of this, so even my dog characters are breed that get avoided by the community. This isn't an "I'm special" speech. I just want to say that if you're planning to make a character, please don't choose a wolf of some random primary color. I literally have a character who is a godly crab made out of a soup cooker. Nintendo still relatively recently released a series of squid kids fighting eachother with ink. Toby Fox's main characters are goats, skeletons, a fish, an anime robot, and whatever Alphys is supposed to be. Even Frisk has three lines for a face. Mickey is a Mouse and nobody heavily copies that. Sonic was chosen to be a hedgehog against all the other choices.

If you're having problems finding a good species, go watch Animal Planet or something. I got the idea for the cellar spider after watching it fight in "Monster Bug Wars", a free YouTube show where they even referenced Jojo in a fight between dung beetles.

I'm tend and love to draw aquatic characters most of the time(other than my main ocs), lack of reference of fish characters make it hard to make, for me here at least.

I know your feeling extremely well. Whenever i do new animal characters i like to use often obscure/lesser known species. And as a huge animal buff, i find baffling that there are countless interesting and obscure animals out there like blackbucks, bongos, chitals, uakaris, manaquins, pottos, caecilians, currasows, tegus, muriquis, tinamous, rheas, jacanas, linsangs, quolls, babirusas (just to name a very few and yes those are all real animals) and yet people only know or use the same typical mainstream animals that you see everyday like dogs, cats, horses, lions, wolves, etc. A little variety wouldn't hurt, ya know?
