Description - What?! What's this? I thought you said th-
- Yeah yeah, I know I said I'd cut down the fanart. But I couldn't help myself! There, I did another fanart. Sue me!

It's not my fault Avatar's so... addicting. And inspirational. And awesome. And... all the pretty things in the world! And don't you just love them as kids? I simply love Azula and Ursa. And Zuko and Azula as brother and sister when they were little! Hope it doesn't look like Ursa is pulling Azula's ear, though, 'cause she's not. She's just putting Azula's hair behind her ear. Mothers tend to do that when they explain with love something to their child, something they definitely must make their child understand. Well... mine does that, anyway.

I don't know if you can tell what happened so I'll explain: Azula pulled another prank on Mai and Zuko (notice the two blushing, hint hint). Maybe she made Zuko fall over Mai again? Or maybe something even worse, lol. She has a sick pleasure to embarrass those two, I guess. And they told Ursa what happened. Part of her was amused, part of her knew she had to reprimand Azula.
Azula: Oh please, mother, it wasn't that much of a big deal. Ty Lee and I were just having fun.

For the background I used a refference from a screenshot of the Zuko Alone episode. Also the textures are from here:

Great work! I wish Ursa had been like this in the show!

Beautiful picture! Truly great work. If only Ursa had actually been like that, Azula would have turned out very differently. Instead, she's really a perfect match for Ozai. The worst father in the history of fathers and the worst mother in the history of mothers. Together, along with Iroh's blatant favoritism of Zuko and his vicious and merciless attitude toward Azula, they create the most toxic family environment you can possibly hope for.

lol as harsh as this sounds i have to say i kinda agree. azula WAS more cold and even sadistic/mischievous but she WOULD have been a VERY different person should there was someone to not be afraid of her Azula (Ursa was), tried to understand her, and give her genuine love (Ozai didn't). for real, i even think the only person who "loved/loves" Azula in the most "right" way was Zuko and he's got his own shit to deal with.Β

Mischievous - definitely, sadistic - absolutely not. It's true Azula enjoys in her victories and in defeating her enemies as thoroughly as possible, but she never goes overboard, nor does she ever harm anybody unnecessarily, and she had actual opportunities to kill, maim and/or torture ALL of her major enemies (Sokka, Toph and Kuei in S02E20, Katara in S02E19 and S02E20, Zuko in S02E20 and S03E21, Iroh from S02E20 to S03E11, Kyoshi Warriors from S02E16 to S03E20, Suki from S02E16 to S03E15, Mai and Ty Lee from S03E15 to S03E20, Bumi in S02E03, Hakoda and the entire invasion force in S03E11), NONE of which she took. An actual sadist would have taken most of the chances mentioned, if not all of them. The SOLE person she killed in the ENTIRE series was Aang (who was revived minutes later), who, because he's the Avatar, was considered to be the Fire Nation's greatest enemy and was the one person in the series whom the entire world believed was destined to KILL HER FATHER, so it's pretty easy to see why she killed him. Plus, it was at the moment when Aang was about to attack her, Zuko and the Dai Li with the Avatar State and we all know how destructive/powerful that thing is. Yes, of course that this is morally wrong, but it's also pretty understandable why she did it when you look at her point of view in the war. Furthermore, Azula did several kind and selfless things for Zuko which he never shows any gratitude or appreciation for. This is most evident in the finale of Book 2 and the first half of Book 3 (before Zuko left to join Team Avatar). Azula tried to improve/repair her relationship with Zuko; from enabling him to return to the Fire Nation as a hero, to assuring him he doesn't need Ozai to restore his honor, but that he had already restored it himself by helping her defeat Aang and Katara, to warning him of the dangers of visiting Iroh in prison and what people might think and/or suspect if they found out, to actively seeking him out when he wandered off alone in Ember Island to their beach house and helping him realize, along with Mai and Ty Lee, that he's actually angry with himself and not with any other person in particular. She did all of this WITHOUT gaining anything in return and she DIDN'T have any hidden agenda either.

Eh, i dont think Azula giving Zuko the credit for killing Aang was ALL good intention. I agree that Azula did want to do something nice to restore Zuko’s name but I think she was also making sure that no damage would come to HER should Aang would survive her hit. She’s smart enough to know that the Avatar has allies who are waterbender healers. And I do believe Azual is sadistic. She has the streak for it at least. She definitely enjoys people suffering and hurting and feeling she has the upper hand after all (which i believe was what terrified Ursa and i understand her). SHE may thought of them as β€œpranks” in her childhood and later β€œstrategic dominance” afterwards, but I for one thought that she went overboard with it. But even then, should someone had been tough enough to challenge Azula’s point of view via intelligence, insight, and power (physical, political etc) and also treat her with love she would have become a much better person.Β

Yes, Azula gave Zuko the credit of killing Aang in order to avoid damage coming to her, but she gave Zuko the chance of helping her in Ba Sing Se and redeeming himself in Ozai's eyes BEFORE she even fought Aang and Katara and LONG BEFORE she realized that Aang might be alive. Yes, Azula is very smart, but she isn't clairvoyant. It was clearly shown that Azula didn't realize nor suspect that Aang might have survived until Zuko lied to her face about his suspicions whether or not Aang was able to survive. Only after he lies to her about this does she tell Ozai that Zuko killed Aang. Here's how their conversation by the pond went. Zuko: "I haven't seen Dad yet. I haven't seen him in three years, since I was banished." Azula: "So what?" Zuko: "So, I didn't capture the Avatar." Azula: "Who cares? The Avatar is DEAD ... [Zuko looks away.] unless you think he somehow miraculously survived." Zuko flashes back to when Katara explained about her vial of spirit water. Katara: "[During flashback.] This is water from the spirit oasis at the north pole. It has special properties so I've been saving it for something important." [Back to the present] Zuko: "No. There's no way he could have survived. [They glare at each other.]" Azula: "Well, then I'm sure you have nothing to worry about." Now, here's an official summary from Avatar Wikia: "Zuko tells her that he does not want to see his father yet because he did not capture the Avatar. Azula reassures him that the Fire Lord should not care because the Avatar is supposed to be dead. She asks him SUSPICIOUSLY if he thinks the Avatar is still alive. Zuko warily recalls the Spirit Oasis water that Katara had showed him, along with its special healing abilities, but he tells his sister that the Avatar could not have survived. Azula gives him a suspicious look, but eventually walks away." If Azula actually suspected that Aang could have survived, it never would've been reported to the Fire Nation that the Avatar is dead. Azula didn't know or suspect that Aang could've survived until after she suspiciously asks Zuko whether he thinks Aang could've survived and after Zuko blatantly lies to her does she begin suspecting that Aang is still alive. Again, Azula had countless opportunities to torture or kill her opponents, which a genuine sadist would have taken, and she didn't take them at all. She never goes overboard. She took over Ba Sing Se, the biggest city in the world, with nearly zero casualties. All of the things Azula did in the war were necessary in order for her to accomplish the mission which was given to her. The only thing she does that isn't really necessary is tease Zuko from time to time. But genuine sadism goes far beyond any sort of teasing and if teasing was a valid excuse to call somebody a sadist, then every other kid on the planet would be a sadist. Furthermore, Ursa was never shown nor implied to be afraid of Azula. She was only ever shown scolding and yelling at Azula, never did she show any trace of fear.

One of the great torments of Ursa's existence was the feeling that, on some level, she simply had not done enough to try to protect and nurture her mentally-ill daughter so that Ozai could not have so effortlessly turned her into a blade in his hand.

Ehsol-namu In reply to BenRG [2019-01-02 02:53:20 +0000 UTC]

personally i wouldn't say azula was mentally "ill" at this point, but she was mentally different (LATER she became mentally ill due to bad upbringing and circumstances). she's innately a lot more indifferent and disconnected to emotion than most and so has a harder time relating and it didn't help that she was exceptionally mentally acute and perceptive. kids like azula NEED an equally intelligent (rationally and emotionally) and perceptive parent or/an parent figure who can see in the kid's point of view and explain the world in a way the kid can understand.Β

ursa who might have been compassionate did not have the mental prowess or toughness required to understand and discipline azula with authority. and as you said, this WOULD be ursa's biggest regret in life, especially since ursa is still a humane enough person to reflect and regret.Β

ozai...ozai....we know about him. tho i see him in the animated series and the comics as two different versions.Β

Thing's could have turned out much, much differently, if Ozai hadn't been a power hungry sociopath.

Then again, his own father seemed to be Avatar's version of Tywin Lannister.

Also out of curiosity do you take requests because I was wondering if you could draw a picture based on a book I am writing about this orphan boy who looks like a modern version of little Zuko.

Yeah, I heard about her, but I haven't gotten to read more. I just think it's stupid to make Zuko's character evolve from bad to good in the show, then to just erase everything in the comics and make him bad again. Dunno. It's weird. :/
