How much of a father was he to Legolas?

The frustrating thing about the movies is that they amplify Thranduil's negative aspects, and reduce his positive traits. Despite what's shown in the movies, Thranduil wasn't the cold, merciless ruler he's shown as in the films. In fact, Bilboβs narration, where he mentions an Elvenking causing trouble with the dwarves over a dispute with a necklace comes from King Thingol (who's quite possibly Thranduil's ancestor because both Legolas and Thranduil are related to Celeborn, who is a descendant of Thingol).
The way that Thranduil is shown in the books is a warm-hearted benevolent ruler who's wary of strangers but is compassionate and trustworthy toward his friends. He's shown as exceptionally polite to Bilbo and compliments him, despite the fact that elves traditionally show disdain towards ungainly-appearing beings.

While they are never shown together in any scene of the books, it's heavily implied that Legolas had a great relationship with his father Thranduil.
In the books, Legolas was never shown as being ashamed of Thranduil or didnβt want the others to know that they were related. In fact, from the moment when Legolas is first introduced in LOTR, he's happily referred to as Thranduil's son. Thranduil also trusts Legolas enough to represent their people in Rivendell, as well as the fact that Legolas never speaks ill of his father (even when doing so would help his friendship with Gimli.)
In a message sent to Legolas from Lady Galadriel, she mentions βin joy thou hast livedβ, implying that he had a happy life in Mirkwood with his father.
