Chapter 2: The Pool of Tears

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When we last left Lillie, she had fallen down a large hole in pursuit of a strange Scorbunny. She found herself in a new outfit, and then in a room of many doors, the only one of these she could open being the smallest around. She drank a mysterious potion that caused her to shrink down to three inches high. At the moment she was crying her eyes out, sad at her inability to progress further at her current size.

After a while, Lillie calmed down a little. “Come on, stop it,” she told herself. “There's no point in crying over this. There's got to be another way out of here. I know I can figure it out...”

She sighed, wishing that her Vulpix was with her right now. If she was here, she'd have been able to jump up onto the table to retrieve the key, or at the very least used her ice abilities to craft the means for her trainer to climb up to it.

As she wiped the tears from her eyes, she looked down to the floor. A tiny glass box that wasn't there a moment ago was now sitting in front of her.

“Curiouser and curiouser,” Lillie proclaimed, opening the lid of the box. Inside was a small cake covered in pink frosting. On top were the words 'Eat me,' written in red icing. She reached in and picked up the cake, looking it over as she had done with the bottle.

“I wonder if this will have any kind of effect on me like that potion,” she pondered. “If it makes me taller...then I should be able to reach the key again. If it makes me even smaller, I might just be able to crawl under the door. Either way, I'll get out of here and into that garden. Any place is better than here right now...”

Lillie took a small bite of the cake, discovering it was vanilla-flavored. The frosting had a nice tang to it, which added to the taste. She swallowed and looked up, anticipating whatever change might occur.

“Come on, which way?” She asked out loud. She waited and waited, but nothing happened. Becoming impatient, she broke down and finished the rest of the cake in a couple more bites.

As she did, she felt another tingling sensation, but this time her body was getting hotter. Her breathing became labored as she held her growling stomach.

Lillie then finally got her answer, and she started to grow, and fast.

“Alright!” She exclaimed, standing up.

As she turned around, however, she found that her growth was not stopping past her normal height.

“Oh no!” Lillie cried, watching in shock as she continued to grow larger and larger. She hit the ceiling with a loud and hard bump to the head, disturbing dust and cobwebs up above. She cried out in pain as she fell over on her rear as the growth continued. She was thirty feet tall by the time it had stopped. She was far too giant to stand upright now, so she was forced to remain sitting.

“Well, isn't this just GREAT!” She yelled out, her eyes watering. “First I was too small to go anywhere, and now I'm too BIG! And I've had all of the potion in that bottle, so I have no way to reverse this! I'm trapped!”

Lillie proceeded to cry once more, her tears flowing as if they were coming out of a broken levee. Each one hit the floor with a splash, and they slowly but surely began to pool and collect around her.

As she went on crying, she didn't notice that one of the other doors had opened, and the Scorbunny she had been chasing after emerged from it.

“Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear,” he said, fixated on his pocket watch again. “I'm going to be super late at this rate. The duchess will not be happy about this...”

When Lillie heard this, and looked down at him. “E-excuse me...Mr. S-scorbunny...” She stuttered through her sobbing.

The Scorbunny looked up, seeing the giant girl in front of him. His eyes widened, and he panicked.

“GAH!” He screamed in terror, dropping several items from his hands. “STAY AWAY!” He quickly zipped back through the door he came out of.

“No, wait!” Lillie cried, but it was too late. The door had slammed shut, and she was by herself again.

She looked down at what the Scorbunny had dropped - a pair of white gloves and a small red fan. Reaching down, she picked the items up.

The room had become fairly hot, and she could still feel the warm lingering effects her sudden growth spurt had on her body. She opened up the fan and began waving it back and forth across her face.

“What an awful mess this has turned into,” Lillie commented, feeling the fan cooling her down. “Everything was so normal this morning, and now look at what has happened to me! I should have thought twice about chasing that silly Pokemon when I had the chance...”

She shut her eyes and leaned back as she went on fanning herself, and she began to think about her family again. “Mother's ought to be worried to death about me. Gladion and Snowy are probably out searching for me, and Father must be calling the police in his panic...”

She started to cry once more. “This is all so horrible...I don't want to be here anymore! I don't want to be stuck here all alone! I have to get back to everyone, I just have to!”

Lillie then felt something unusual on her other hand. She opened her eyes and looked down, and was surprised to see that she had absentmindedly put on one of the Scorbunny's gloves.

“Wait a minute...how is this fitting me right now? Could it be that...”

The glove didn't fit for much longer, and it soon fell off her hand and to the floor.

“I am!” She gasped. “I'm shrinking again!”

She returned to her feet, heading back over to the table while still fanning herself. Judging its height compared to hers, she estimated she was now about two feet high.

The problem was, she was still shrinking rapidly.

“Oh no...what's causing this? I haven't had anything since that cake...”

Lillie looked to the fan she was still using, and it was humongous. How she didn't notice it getting bigger in her grasp was beyond her. The reality dawning on her, she quickly dropped it before shrinking away completely, winding up at the three inch high mark once again.

“That was a narrow escape!” She said, looking herself over. “But now I'm back to square one...”

She stared back up to the key. She puffed her cheeks and tried to shake herself out of her funk.

“Alright, let's give this one more try...”

With that, Lillie began to climb one of the legs again, doing everything she could to keep a firm grip around it. When she reached the halfway point, she thought that perhaps she'd manage to reach the top this time.

...and then she slipped...

“NO!” She cried out, sliding down once more.

However, this time, instead of landing on the floor, she fell into a large body of warm water with a tremendous splash.

Lillie returned to the surface, gasping for air. She looked around, finding that everything had become much darker. She spit out some of the water from her mouth, noticing it had a salty taste to it. But she was nowhere near an ocean, so...

“Wait a minute...are these all of my tears?” She asked.

Indeed they were, and she gave another groan.

“I do wish I hadn't cried so much,” she muttered, swimming about. “Am I going to literally drown in my own sorrow?”

Just then, Lillie heard splashing some distance away from her, and she tried to make out what it was.

Remembering her Pokedex studies, she determined it to be a Rattata, swimming past in its own hurry.

“Hello!” She called out to it. “Can you hear me?”

The Rattata was startled, stopping in its tracks and looking back to her with a puzzled expression.

“Pardon me,” Lillie started again. “I didn't mean to frighten you...”

“What do you want?” The Rattata asked in a feminine voice. “Are you going to try and catch me as I tread water?”

Lillie blinked at the Rattata's response, more-so for the fact that it was talking like the Scorbunny .

“No I'm not,” she replied. “Even if I had Pokeballs on me, I'm not interested in catching Pokemon.”

The Rattata gave a 'hmph.' “I suppose it's just as well. I was having such a lovely time alone in the dark, and what happens? The hallways flood, I'm forced to swim for the first time in forever, and I have no idea how or why!”

“That's...kinda my fault,” Lillie replied. “I guess I had more tears in me than I thought was possible. Sorry about that...”

“Well, I suppose there's not much need to apologize at the moment,” the Rattata commented.

“Why do you roam the halls all by yourself?” Lillie asked. “Don't you have any family or friends around here?”

“No I don't,” the Rattata lamented, “and I wouldn't know what I'd do if I did.”

“That's such a shame,” Lillie replied. “You would absolutely adore Snowy. She is very friendly and loves to play with everyone she meets.”

“And who is this...Snowy?” The Rattata asked.

“My Vulpix, of course,” Lillie answered.

The Rattata gave a look of fright. “Good heavens! I hate those things! Just as much if not more than Persians and Stoutlands...or is it the other way around...”

Lillie was surprised. “I'm sorry again for startling you. I had no idea.”

“Of course you wouldn't. My tales on such matters know no bounds. If you wish to hear them, I will tell them for you.”

“Uh...maybe later,” Lillie commented. “Anyway...do you know a way out of here?”

The Rattata looked around, then motioned with her head, swimming away again.

“Wait, please!” Lillie called, swimming after her as quickly as she could.

As they progressed, she found that the pool was becoming more and more crowded with Pokemon. She identified a Doduo, a Rufflet, a Chatot, a Psyduck, and a myriad of others that joined in the bizarre swimming escapades. It soon became brighter, and before long she could see what appeared to be a sandy shoreline. Relieved at the sight, she and the cavalcade made their way to its safety...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The good news is, she's out of that room. The bad news is, she's headed for places unknown. What will she have to deal with first?

Why, that'd be “A Caucus Race and a Long Tale,” coming soon...
