Description

Usually each winter I am inspired to do an armor piece. The Panther is the subject of this year's print. When the German army invaded Russia in World War II, the Russian T-34 tank they encountered came as a big shock. The Panther tank was designed as a response to the T-34. After some initial teething problems the Panther became a formidable fighting machine which is widely regarded as the best all-around tank of the war. The Panther features good maneuverability as well as excellent armor and a devastating 75MM gun. This print depicts an Ausf G version of the Panther in winter camouflage on the Eastern front.

Very nicely done. Transmission and final drive gear issues plagued this best of class tank. The final drive kept failing as the one used due to machine tool availability issues had small double spur gears with inherently higher stress loads vs. the original design which was an epicyclic gearing (planetary gear) based system.

Panther tank is an example of over engineering, although, most of the teething problems that spoiled Kursk debut of the Panther were solved in later years, lack of raw materials and reliable engine with good enough transmission-spoiled this tank over its career...

Plus the loss of nearly all their veteran crews who had survived Normandy. Allied armor crews were just much more experienced by that point and had overwhelming support assets. Β

Excellent work Mark. The Panther is, next to the Jagdpanther, my favorite.

Very nice and I bet you could also knock out a few prototype tanks as well. Also the Panther in my opinion was the better tank during the war than the Tiger.

I have a special fondness for the U.S. response: Β The M36 TD. Β Β

It's your usual wonderful 'you are there!' art, great palette and perspective.

Beautiful render!!!Β  It looks like it has kill rings on the end of the 75mm main gun. I've seen a Panther MkV in person at the Patton Museum/Ft. Knox, KentuckyΒ a number of year ago, however it was an outsideΒ static display with no treads. It surprised meΒ with its size, even though it was considered a medium tank.Β

Nothing looks lethal than a Panther tank.
