Description The M60 Main Battle Tank was a mainstay of the American military for more than three decades. Developed during the cold war as a response to the Soviet T-54 the M60 featured a 105mm main gun. Steadily upgraded through the years, the M60A3 TTS version of the tank had a superb firing system with a better thermal imaging system than the early M1 Abrams. M60s performed well in combat. The M60A1 RISE Passive version of the tank featured explosive reactive armor and was used by the US Marine Corp during the Gulf War in 1991. The tank also saw combat in the Yom Kippur War and the Iran-Iraq war. The type has been retired from US service but it continues today in use with military forces around the world.

I drove and then later was the gunner on one of these tanks from 1998 - 2001. Of course they were being used as OPFOR tanks at Hohenfels.

Brings back memories of my Army time in Germany '72 - '74. Β I saw many of these rolling thru the town I lived in, as there were training areas nearby...and that was partially due to the mission of my base, which had to do with nuc weapons. (Always nice to have armor in the area if something bad were to happen i.e Β a terrorist attempt to penetrate to the weapons area) Anyway, it was, by all accounts of guys I knew crewed this beast, a fine tank.Β

Why?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

markkarvon In reply to M4IAN [2014-12-26 01:23:56 +0000 UTC]

During exercises, the tanks sometimes had removable orange or blue vinyl panels with numbers which would have been taped on the turret. In the elements the tape did not always hold up. Artistically speaking, a peeling panel adds interest and alsoΒ avoids the draw on the eye which exact duplication of the panel on the glacis would cause.

Though this comment is old, I feel I should inform you that this is not the case. The bend in the wargame insignia is because that particular sign is blocking a piece of equipment. This is evident on the photo upon which this painting (?) is based, where you can clearly see that there is no damage to any of the insignia, and that the bend was deliberately made. In all reality, the only reason it appears bent here is because it was bent in real life.
