Lovely painting! I see you've got the red turret tops that recent evidence suggests were present. And that water... it almost looks photographic!
I've had a lifelong obsession with the Pearl Harbor attack, but turned my artistry to model building instead of painting... I actually used several 1/700 scale Arizona models converted to the other battleships to replicate the attack as a diorama. For a few months, it resided in a military veterans' museum, but the diorama base got destroyed several years later. I do still have the ships and shore installations packed away, though! (Nowdays, you can just buy kits of the ships, but I had fun converting them back in the day.)

Thank you. You should post some photos of the diorama if you have any.

I only have some old film camera snapshots in storage, and not very good ones at that, but if I can find them I'll try to upload some scans. Don't hold your breath, though, as it'll take some time for me to find them.

The U.S.S Arizona the main target for the Japanese navy. And the ship that is still leaking oil to this day.Β

What is the secret for doing the sea so realistic. It almost outfocusing the ship.

I love seeing art of USS Arizona (BB 39) as she was before the bombing, I think it's easy to forget she was a battleship with more than twenty years of service behind her when she was sunk.

Nice one, Mark. When the US Navy lost the Arizona, to me, it was a lot like England loosing the HMS Hood. Neither ship was modern. But both ships had a special place in the hearts of their country men and women. Their lost was devastating. Unfortunately the US had a bunch of others at the same time of course.

Looking at this piece, and reading the comments, was sending shivers down my spine. This doesn't happen very often, but when it does it means that something very special is happening.
As another historic aside, the Arizona's forward turrets were salvaged and installed on USS Nevada in 1944. In this guise they participated in the assaults on Okanawa and Iwo Jima.

Glory bought in death and flame
Little left her but her name.
At the start of things she died,
Rotting, rusting in the tide.
Still, she stood, and still she fought.
Proof of what the war gods wrought.
Living on in myth and story.
Gone from air, but not from glory.
She had such beautiful lines, and in her rusting hull sleep those who died on that horrible day, and many who died long after. Β Thank you for a lovely picture and a beautiful image.

You're welcome. Β So grateful to them all. Β An image that just rips open my heart is the gallant captain of the might West Virginia, his body ripped open, raging as he died that he could not fight his great ship, while one of his crew (and a hero in his own right) reassured him that he had trained them all well, and that the great vessel would fight again.
She did.

Yes. It is also heartbreaking that when they raised the West Virginia they found evidence of men who had survived until December 23 in air pockets within the wreck.
