Description This is a painting I did for a friend. I've always loved Dark Phoenix, and was really pleased to have opportunity to paint her! It's painted on canvas in acrylic and normal household emulsion. I hope you guys will tell me what you think!

I LIKED THIS ALOT WHEN I FISRT SAW IT MONTHS AGO. I DON'T KNOW WHY I DIDN'T FAVORITE IT THEN.
IT INSPIRES ME TO DRAW THE GODDESS OF FIRE IN MY STORY, WHO IS ONE OF THE CO-CREATORS OF AND WIVES OF MY CHARACTER, "URANUS." JUST PUT SOME ANCIENT GREEK LOOKING CLOTHES ON HER, AND I'D BE IN BUSINESS!

Dark Phoenix is my favourite X-Men character, and now you come to mention it she is a very mythic character, very much a goddess. I've always been into mythology. I look forward to seeing your fire goddess!

RIVERKING In reply to MarkManley [2009-02-09 16:35:42 +0000 UTC]

YEAH, I LIKE MYTHOLOGY TOO. THE REASON I USED IT SO MUCH WITH THE STORY OF "URANUS" AND THEM IS BECAUSE I HAVE TROUBLE COMING UP WITH MY OWN CHARACTERS, AND MYTHOLOGY IS FREE GAME, SO I TAKE THOSE CHARACTERS AND GIVE THEM MY OWN SPIN. IT'S JUST TO MAKE MYSELF DRAW PEOPLE.

Mythology is a great spring board for creativity- all the great artists and playwrites have done so, so you're following in a long established tradition. And the gods are usually pretty hot so it's a great excuse to draw hot people!

RIVERKING In reply to MarkManley [2009-02-09 18:45:35 +0000 UTC]

IT'S EASIER TO DRAW HOT PEOPLE, BECAUSE I'M USUALLY USING MYSELF AS A MODEL...JUST KIDDING. BUT I REALLY DO USE MYSELF FOR ALL THE MALE FIGURES...I JUST ADD A LITTLE MORE MUSCLE. A SCRAUNY GREEK GOD WOULD NOT BE VERY CONVINCING.

You don't look particularly scrawny! But using yourself is a good idea- no copyright issues and you can get the exact pose you want! Plus, like you say, you can exaggerate the parts you want to make bigger! ha

Hey that's ok- you been busy? All ok here thanks, just been booking a few more theatre trips. Not doing anywhere near enough drawing tho!

I FORGOT WHAT IT IS YOU SAID YOU DO WITH THE THEATER.

I wish I worked in theatre. I'm lucky enough to have a few friends who are professional performers on stage in London's West End, and I also spend a lot of time at the theatre (29 times last year, on track to beat that this year, especially as I plan to head to Broadway next month too). But my day job is a plain old Customer Care role for a computer company.

I'VE SPENT A LITTLE TIME IN THEATERS AS AN IRISH DANCER, NOT BIG SHOWS LIKE "RIVERDANCE," BUT SOME PRETTY FUN GIGS.

MarkManley In reply to RIVERKING [2009-03-04 09:10:17 +0000 UTC]

That's impressive- Irish dancing is a very tricky discipline. Can you do those really high leaps??

RIVERKING In reply to MarkManley [2009-03-04 20:14:22 +0000 UTC]

IRISH DANCING - IT'S A COMMON TRAIT OF THE SITH.
THE LEAPS YOU'RE REFERRING TO ARE PROBABLY WHAT WE CALL "OVER-2-3'S," AND, YES, I DO THEM FAIRLY WELL.

You must have powerful legs!

I CAN MAKE THE CALF WORK-OUT MACHINE AT THE GYM BEG FOR MERCY AND, IF I'M IN MY HARDSHOES OR MY DANCE SNEAKERS, I CAN JUMP UP ON BOTH MY POINT TOES LIKE THOSE CHICKS IN BALLET AND WALK AROUND LIKE THAT...NOT THAT THERE'S REALLY ANY CALL FOR THAT IN IRISH DANCING, BUT IT'S NICE TO HAVE THE ABILITY.

MarkManley In reply to RIVERKING [2009-03-06 09:04:15 +0000 UTC]

Most impressive! My legs are pretty strong too, so I'll have to give the tippy-toe thing a go!

RIVERKING In reply to MarkManley [2009-03-09 18:27:03 +0000 UTC]

YOU HAVE TO BE IN CERTAIN SHOES THAT ARE SUPPORTIVE AROUND THE TOES AND ALSO FLEXIBLE AT THE ARCHES TO ALLOW FOR YOUR POINTS.
WHEN STARTING OUT, PRACTICE ON A BAR OR CHAIR OR SOMETHING AND GO EASY. DON'T HURT YOUR ANKLES.

Mmm, this is wonderful! I love Phoenix and this piece was a joy to look at. I love the detail you put on her, especially on her sash and boots.

One thing - do you scan in your paintings or take photographs of them for dA submission? This seems a little out of focus, like your computer zoomed into it too close to it. You can see a grain-like texture throughout the image, too. Was that intentional or perhaps it was the texture of the paper?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MarkManley In reply to Bravepower [2007-04-25 15:49:37 +0000 UTC]

Hi- thanks, glad you like the painting.

It was scanned- not sure if the scanner was a good one tho!

The texture is because it was painted on canvas, not paper. I'm an old-fashioned boy I like the texture coming through.

Bravepower In reply to MarkManley [2007-04-25 15:54:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up! I suppose I'm too used to the smoothness of a lot of paintings on dA. I don't think there's a lot of canvas work here (though I could be wrong).

MarkManley In reply to Bravepower [2007-04-25 15:57:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I think you are right. I also think I need to learn how to use some artworking software packages- then I can cut the paint out all together!! lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bravepower In reply to MarkManley [2007-04-25 16:08:33 +0000 UTC]

Ah, but there's not enough traditional artwork on deviantART, and the good ones usually end up the best of all of the deviations! I have a lot of respect for you traditional artists.

However, you could use digital software to adjust your scans so that they look correct in terms of colour and contrast; scanners very often don't detect colours precisely the way they appear on the page. So a little retouching might be a good idea.

I think it would still be fine to submit digitally retouched artwork to the traditional art section, too, as long as you explain it was retouched in the description.

MarkManley In reply to Bravepower [2007-04-26 08:29:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, if I knew how to use any art software packages- or even if I HAD any of them, I would give that a go! One day I'll join the digital revolution...it's a bit expensive at the moment

This is very cool. The colors are very vibrant. I've always appreciated those who can paint. I never did have the patience to learn to paint to where I had any skill at it. It's so messy. I was lazy and stuck with the pencils. heh heh.

Good job! I'd love to see your take on Batman.

Funny you should say that...I've got a Batman piece planned. Glad you like Phoenix!! I'd love to see you draw her...

Thanks!! You art has a very vibrant, striking visual quality- bold use of colour and design shows you're not afraid to go for it. I tend to get a bit...prissy, I guess!! But we all have different approaches. Phoenix is one of my personal faves

thanks for checking out my work and also for the comments, and there is nothing wrong with being a little more prissy as you put it, it certainly works for you as your artwork is fantasticly detailed and the use of colour is perfect, look forward to seeing more
