I'm just starting to sculpt and I like to set my sights high but damn. I don't think I'll ever be able to reach this level. Amazing work man. Did you use super sculpey for the griffon statue base as well? I'm curious to know how you got the cracked effect, it looks so good.

MarkNewman In reply to asianyo [2014-05-19 14:33:22 +0000 UTC]
Yes, The entire sculpt is all Sculpey.
Cracked effect? Carving crack line in the raw sculpt as well as chipping off and carving into the baked (cured) sculpture.
It crumbles and breaks like real stone would.

This, among your other works are fantabulous! I know you hear this all the time, but I've gotta say it too! Thanks for the info about the Super Sculpey reg. and the SS firm grey mix. I've used SS reg. and SS firm grey, but never together. I have enjoyed using paper clay for my piddly work lately though. I'll have to try it your way and hope for the best. What did you use to smooth things down? My inquiring mind would like to know.... Thanks! :0)

Do you use any special solvents to smooth the sculpey? Or is that all done with tools?
Incredible work

Holy cow!!! you are insane... that is so sick n awesome; I wish I had 1/100 th of your skill...
Did you go to art school ?
By the way do you photoshop your backgrounds or is it some lighting setup?

Thanks so much, I'm glad you like.
I went to art school as an illustration major. i Started sculpting
seriously after art school. Mostly self taught.
The background on this photo was a gradated back drop, no photoshop here.

wow.... no photoshop ? thats a cool trick. I will try that with some of my still life photography.
By the way, all my recent browsing of DA sculpture deviations(including yours) inspired me to start sculpting. If I am to start from level "ZERO" do you have any book or online course in your mind that can help me? Just got a bag of modelling clay and that wooden pottery tools kit.
Thanks in advance for the advice!

Thank you David, I appreciate your comments.
This sculpt is no longer in my posetion. I sent it off the Bowen Designs for production.
Your work is very beautiful. The next time I'm in Carmel I'll have to check out the modern masters gallery.
Mark.
