Thank you, i don't usually do "photo realism" but i was asked to do so for a couple in my gallery. I much prefer to use a reference but create something special from it which i find far more rewarding. I actually learn nothing by straight forward copying ... All down to personal choice though.

Thanks, to be honest it's not a reference I would have chosen as I didn't think I would gain anything from drawing it but hey I was so wrong. I guesse on this occasion my son knew best as he chose it for me as a challenge. Glad I drew this and I certainly won't be so dismissive about references in future.

I've been looking to use smooth bristol. I use Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Paper at the moment. What do you think makes Smooth Bristol "better" or what do you like about it?

I use 3 different papers, the smooth Bristol and the velum both Strathmore 300 series and also the Fabriano Artistico HP paper. I would choose the smooth Bristol if I wanted a nice smooth finish especially the darker values and also Crisp detailing. The surface also makes lifting graphite off easier with erasers (as long as you aren't too heavy) which makes for nice highlights or loose hair. With a toothed surface there is sometimes an issue with going from a dark to a lighter tone but getting that grainy look to it as the black lightens, the smooth paper can help get rid of that but it can take a while to get that technique nailed down. So I would go smooth paper for tight realism and a velum for a more painterly or looser application. Go try it out if your art store sells separate loose sheets, any smooth Bristol will do to give you an idea of what it's like ... I used a cheep bleached white one for 2 years before moving up the the Strathmore. I've seen your gallery and I can get where you are heading and it should definitely be tried out. Stick with it for a while though as it can be tricky at first but it's worth investing some time experimenting with and learning it's secrets... I love learning what is possible with it and DA is full of incredible and magical drawings done on that paper.
