Description The cross shows NJ's heritage as an English colony; the colors, buff and blue, are used on NJ's current flag and are taken from the uniforms of American soldiers in the Revolutionary War. They are also vaguely reminiscent of the Swedish flag, alluding to New Jersey's original colonization by the Swedes. Centered over the cross is the state's shield in red, with simplified white plows. The red shield and white plows enhance visibility and establish a color scheme of red white and blue, pointing to New Jersey's membership in the union. The shade of red I chose was also taken from Revolutionary War era uniforms.

NJ is my native state, so this one is a little personal, especially because people (wrongly!) dump on New Jersey all the time. I know the NJ Turnpike goes past some ugly, smelly heavy industry, and Jersey Shore was definitely not what I'd regard as good publicity, but it's a great state. Nice beaches, top notch universities, it's right between to great cities, it has mountains to hike in in the north, 1.1 million acres of Pine Barrens to explore in the south, and it's got all these things packed into a very manageable piece of real estate. New Jersey is also one of the most prosperous states in the nation. Oh, and according to a recent study [link] , NJ has the least corrupt state government, so that's another feather in its cap (or plow on its shield or whatever). This great little state deserves a better flag!

My Virginia flag is similar to the Dominican Republic, but with only a white cross quartered by Union blue and Confederate grey (or maybe blue slate).

Yes, I saw it. It's a good design. I'll be uploading it to the wiki as soon as I get to VA.

I understand you are looking for provincial flag proposals, too. I have one for Alberta.

Yes, that's correct! Canadian proposals are welcome too. Fortunately for the citizens who have to look at them, the Canadian provincial flags are considerably better than most of the US state flags, which I don't have to tell you are by and large quite bad. The flag of Quebec is one of favorites among all the flags of the world. Part of me almost wishes Quebec would become an independent nation just so they could grace the world stage with their flash flag.

Alberta's is borderline, a seal on a bed-sheet like the state flags, and my desire is to have it changed. My take was to adopt the Wild Rose, and using the official colours (ultramarine blue and deep yellow), what I came up is what you'll see on my gallery. Another radical change was to make it square, but sadly that is something not normal in North America. However, because of its design the emblem would ruin the effect of that flag if it was a 2:1 ratio; that is unless you take a look at 's rendering. His take on my flag would be better for a rectangular banner, but he didn't have the vector for my Wild Rose emblem. Alberta also had fringe secessionist attempts in the early eighties when the Trudeau government ruined Her economy with the hated NEP. I don't doubt Alberta will eventually end up breaking apart from Canada in the years to follow if Canada don't do something about it's policies.

Thanks! I'm going for a Mid-Atlantic states (PA, NJ, NY and DE) theme to show the historical links and modern day cultural and economic ties that these states have, which you'll see on subsequent posts for New York and Delaware. (Delaware will take me a bit longer to do because I need to draw a convincing bold rooster first.)

* The cross should noting be interpreted as having any religious significance. Crosses and saltires work well on flags because they are easy to easy to make and are visually distinctive and, given a high-contrast color scheme, easy to see clearly from a distance.

In fact, here is a website where you can petition the idea of a new flag [link]

Thanks! Currently I'm posting these here as well [link] , along with other proposals and designs I've seen around the net. At some point I'll hold informal contests to whittle down the pack to those flags that have the best chance at being approved.

Now that I look at this, I think I need to recenter the shield a bit. Ugh...
