Description
The terrifying Gorgoneon mask was considered a symbol of protection: this image was often found on shields and armor, for example, on the armor of Alexander the Great. In Roman times, Medusa began to be depicted as a woman: her monstrous essence was shown by writhing snakes instead of hair. Before the "reincarnation" Medusa was an attractive girl with beautiful hair, so beautiful that even God admired her. The girl tried to hide from him in the temple of Athena, but she was cursed, and her hair turned into snakes, and her eyes turned everyone to stone. ⠀
However, there is another variation of the legend, according to which the sisters of the unfortunate snake–haired girl - Euryale and Spheno – themselves wanted to become monsters because of compassion for their younger sister.⠀
