I recently saw at least part of Flight of the Navigator and I have let to see a connection. people are saying there's a reference and I guess Spoony could be with Ma-ti inside his mind...but I don't know. It seems stretched.

Nah, the reference is blatant. They purposely quoted the movie, and they were totally acknowledging their reference, especially is Nella's tone of voice. (I think it was from closer to the beginning of the movie...)

actually, I like it when cartoon girls aren't drawn with prominent rosy lips, it's a nice change. I think Nella's man-ish appearance comes from her chin, and her lack of eyelashes.

I have to agree on that. It's a measure of great skill to draw female cartoony character looking female enough without secondary gender characteristics like (existent) lips and/or eyelashes.
Though noticing that Marobot generally incorporates full lips on females as part of his style, I had to ask about them.
I know Nella as a character is supposed to not conform to 'standard' ideals of beauty, but frankly I find it upsetting to see her drawn pretty much in the same way man look in this particular style.
