Description You throw away your old shoes when you are done with them
And forget the dusty miles that you will have to walk
To a grocery store to buy another pair
A grocery store that won't let you in without the shoes
That you no longer have, naked feet kneading dirt
When you run home and find only the sooty trail
And empty bin left by the garbage truck.
Shoeless now you will wander through life
Barred from stores, restaurants, parks.
You will have to set up a tent on the sidewalk
And move into the median between the two ways of the street.
You will become a part of the written-off margin
Of people who threw away their pasts too fast
And therefore sacrificed their futures.

I keep my past in my pocket, an ever present resource for everything. A folded piece of paper aged and worn with lines of time and lines of life.

I still wear my shoes from high school. Duct taped, safety pinned, painted on, penned on, ripped up, beaten in stepping stones of my life.

Pack Rats are undiscovered Gods, with the secret of life buried between newpaper clippings and dog food containers. We should only be so lucky.

This is awesome

It reminds me in highschool. the teacher wanted us to give her an idea for a mural we could do as a class. I told her we could all bring in our old shoes, dip them in paint, and throw them at a wall. She's said if I brought in enough shoes, we'd do it.

The next day, I had two trash bags full of old shoes. She didn't keep her end of the deal
Fuckin teacher

We send our old shoes to Haiti every year. The school, that is.

Yeah, high school is all about promising things and then sayin' "wait, no." I suppose it's supposed to be a life lesson of some sort.
