989.M41Voidships departing from the forts of the Limes Gondwana on a course towards the Thetys Rift soon encountered a strange phenomenon in deep space. An aurora, curtains of dancing light, had begun surrounding the outer reach of the rift in space and time. Their spectacle was mesmerizing, yet unsettling to all its witnesses, for the light they saw was no mere optical illusion but the symptom of much greater, more fundamental forces at work on the edge of the abyss. The lights invaded dreams and the subconsciousness of unseasoned voidsmen drove some insane and others into a kind of addiction.
Mere months after their first occurrence, the aurorae of the Thetys Rift were deemed intrusions of the Immaterium upon the nature of mundane space and time, and the ships were ordered to close all shutters, so that none may lay eyes upon those diversions of the natural law.
