Description
Bearing the name of an ancient knight told to have fought side by side with a lion, the 'Iwein' itself was destined for glory among all vessels of the Imperial Navy. Its grand splendor is only overcome by the sheer prowess of its weaponry.The 'Iwein' is outfitted with a massive array of relatively light fixed broadside Macro cannons, ideal for dealing with great numbers of smaller vessels. For taking out heavy targets, the vessel rather relies on its turreted batteries, which are especially numerous on this design. It's twenty Hangar bays do allow the ship to carry a massive complementing strike-craft force, allowing it to operate more independently than other vessels of its class. This versatility, however, comes at the cost of heavy armor and survivability.

Ah, a good question. I've never put together a proper crew roster for these vessels, and in terms of lore, it seems to vary greatly, depending on the source. So I can only roughly say that I'd expect most of these groups to go well into the tens of thousands, safe for pilots, officers and mechanicus personnell who may be a little lower.

A few of those Macro Cannons have statues or other additions placed in front of them. I actual like that detail I think one set of designers not talking to another set would be common and being 40k entire teams will probably have spent generations servicing those guns anyway dut to inflexible managment.

That's a wonderful bit of background for that particular detail! Yes, I think, for the most part, these issues would just be part of the imperial bureaucracy and dogma. And maybe the commanding officer just thinks "Well, just in case somebody shoots these statues off, let's keep the guns behind them operational"

12 kilometers? That's huge, even for an Imperium ship (I think I read somewhere that most modern-day imperial battleships are 6-8 kilometers long). It'd be awasome to have this as your personal flagship, leading an entire sector battlefleet.

I've spent some time going over looooong debates concerning scale in 40k. Especially when it comes to Starships and Titans. Most of the time, I try to keep things sensible within 40k, but go as big as possible. In my version of 40k, 12 Kilometers would be a big, but not extremely rare size for a Battleship. The Iwein is supposed to be a relic from the Great Crusade, which makes it special in its own right, but it's not a superweapon or any kind of legendary flagship.

I didn't use any specific reference. Many of the actual Warhammer 40k spaceship designs are a bit too "sturdy" for my taste, so I specifically took some liberties with the shapes.
