Description
Alexis didn’t like being the “bad guy.”
Honestly, she was just doing her job. It wasn’t like she actually enjoyed foreclosing on people’s homes and auctioning them off to recoup the bank’s investment. That was just what she did for a living. Of course, to really succeed in this line of work, it helped if you were a bit callous. No one had ever accused Alexis of being overly sensitive, that was certain! Seriously, though, even if she was more empathetic by nature, she would have a hard time finding sympathy for people who couldn’t pay their bills on time. If you take out a mortgage on your house, you have to pay the money back to the bank. How hard was that to grasp?
In this particular case, the owner of the house, a Mrs. Ishida, had not only fallen behind in her mortgage payments, but had died without leaving behind a will. That left her sole heir, her granddaughter Mayu, in a rather awkward situation. Alexis couldn’t really take the time to concern herself with Ms. Ishida’s fate, however; she had to finish cataloging the contents of the home before 5:00 PM. Besides, there were government agencies that took care of the destitute, weren’t there?
Jesus, this house was in a sorry state of disrepair. It wasn’t surprising that the owner hadn’t kept the place up, considering her financial situation, but it would make it harder for Alexis to get decent bids when the house went up for auction. The furnishings weren’t in very good shape, either, so they wouldn’t bring in much money. She came to a closed door.
“What’s through here, Ms. Ishida?”
“That is the gallery,” the girl replied tightly.
Alexis’ spirits perked up. If the old woman had accumulated any decent pieces of art, she might earn back the bank’s investment after all. Her hopes were dashed almost immediately. The only “artwork” on display here seemed to be some sort of figurines. Dolls. Wonderful.
