I don't understand why I'm still one of the only people in my grade who knows it's "a lot", not "alot", and I know the difference between "you're" and "your".
Frustrated me ever since I was a little kid.

It is a word and I can prove it.
A lot of- quantifier to modify nouns "a lot of cars"
alot-adverb modifies verbs "I eat alot" "She drives alot to Seattle"
a lot demands the preposition of in American English
You cannot say #"there are a lot cars"Β
This is different from alot which modifies verbs which cannot take a preposition #"She drives alot of to Seattle"
Spell checkers, prescriptive grammarians, and the MLA are wrong and you have been lied to and told how to spell by them. This makes less sense then when they decided that using a double negative really means a positive, and is almost as bad as when they told us all not to end a sentence with a preposition.Β
