Of the wide range of dragon species, the fairy dragon is the smallest known type.
These dragons come in a wide range of colors when encountered in the wild, and each has a unique design of iridescent crystal growths that the dragons use to tell each other apart. They are also the main source of communication as they can be flashed in many patterns. This often causes them to be mistaken for fireflies at night, although searching for them in the dark would be in vain as they're extremely shy and tend to disappear at the first sign of humans. They're wings are fragile and powered mostly by their magical aura, which they keep strong by decorating their nests with crystals they collect.
I was inspired to create these dragons when I was outside picking raspberries and blackberries and imagined a dragon small enough that it would carry berries one at a time back to its nest.

-------
Made of polymer clay, acrylics, glaze, microbeads, glass beads, swarovski crystals, wire, film. About 5 inches high, haven't measured it yet as I lost my ruler

how did you do the wings?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MaryBunnie In reply to karrett [2011-05-23 21:13:02 +0000 UTC]

I just used fantasy film You glue it to wire and use a candle to make the film hard and durable and to bring out the colors. Then after its a good idea to glaze both sides of each wing, and I also embedded micro beads and glass bubbles into the wings using glaze

MARY!!!!! HOW DID YOU MAKE THOSE WINGS?!?!? They look so professional, I used just a candle for mine, did you use a blow gun or hair dryer? Is the texture still papery or did you turn it to a kind a plastic? This is the most beautiful thing I've eer seen! The tail... The back....The head!... the eyes!! THE WINGS!!!!!! Please tell me this wasn’t your first try on making the film wings You do such a professional job!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MaryBunnie In reply to Wood-Splitter-Lee [2011-05-22 20:19:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh gosh I just blushed!!
Thank you!!!
I used a candle too! I held and waved the wings over the flame for a few minutes each, it was very calming! I didn't know you used film too, I need to check that out! I always try and look at my friends work as much as possible but sometimes in the big stack of deviations in my inbox the art I want to see most gets lost
Here is something cool I figured out! I put down a piece of parchment paper and set the candle on top of that, then as you slowly crisp the wings you can see where the color is becoming more intense (very easily thanks to the white parchment paper), soon after the color gets very intense in one area you can form a hole by holding that area over the flame longer! They do feel very much like plastic now, I tried to hold the wings over the candle long enough so that they would become taught around the wire I used to brace them Finally I used gloss glaze on both sides and embedded little clear and iridescent microbeads into the glaze while it was wet at the base of each wing, I really like the effect that came out of that!
I am so happy you like her, you brought a big smile to my face! I used microbeads and tiny glass bubbles on most of her body and some swarovski crystals as well The only problem with microbeads is that they need about 4 coats of glaze on top to be completely secure in place but it is well worth the extra effort!

These were actually the second pair I made I just got in fantasy film last week right after school finals so I was so excited to use it! for so long I have wanted to make wings that were light and not entirely of clay I made them right after a yellowy green and pink pair that look more like tradition batlike dragon wings which will be on a little oriental dragon sculpt He's a pretty intricate one, and will require a LOT of painting detail but I hope he will look good in the end! Ever since completing my posable serpent I have rediscovered my love of detail which got lost for a while I made both pairs of wings in about 15 minutes and haven't made any since, but I don't know why because it was actually really fun! I think my next pair will be clay with film in between instead of wire
Again my friend, thank you!! I'm so happy that you think I'm professional, I try my best because I always want to challenge myself and get better! And it's so wonderful to know an artist such as yourself that takes as much time and puts as much love into their work as I do!!

Mary, you have incredible patents! And thank you for such kind complements, Wow I would have probably laid down a lick layer of super glue and scattered the shards over it but I’ve never thought of using the gloss as a glue, I’ll have to try it some day! I found out about the fantasy film too about a week ago [link] if you download it its easer to see the wings at the bottom picture, I used clay over wire. Your wings are way better though, I need to practice more before mine look near as excellent as yours. I will definitely try the parchment paper technique! I really love everything about your dragon, the crystals and shards really added a stunning impact, the kind that once you see, you never forget.

Aww I can't thank you enough!
I use a glaze that people usually use to make pendants, it has a small applicator tip that is perfect for using on wings!
The wings on your dragon are really good, especially for your first ones!!! My first ones are the ones on this guy [link] his wings turned out very hard to photograph, they look better indoors This is definately one of those times that it would be awesome if I lived closer because it's so hard to describe in words how exactly I melt the wings, I get really absorbed into it!
You are too sweet really! I'm so happy that you like her! I hope I get inspired to make another one soon!!!

ME TOO!!! I wanna buy one tooooo!!! XD with my favorite colors haha! The wings look amazing! Did you buy the film from the website I showed you? Or did you find something cheaper. Mary, your art gets better and better every time! Truely! If I made a fairy dragon. I think I would try to glue some feather fluff around the wings and at the tip of the tail =3 no idea what style to go for yet other then that. I love how yours sparkle! Like the toys and cartoons girls LOVE and used to love as kids!
Question for you too. Did you bake the body with the wings in? Or just poke the holes first then bake? Were did you find seed beads so small? I need to go to hobby lobby =3 get glitter and lots of colors

MaryBunnie In reply to KumoriYori [2011-05-22 19:48:24 +0000 UTC]

Awww Tessa you are so sweet!!! I'd happily make you one ANY time you know!!! I got the same sort of film but off of ebay because they had a sample pack and I thought that way I could choose which colors I liked best This color has peacock in the name I think! I have been wanting to detail more and more after making the posable serpent I think you will really like the next dragon to come out, he is oriental with fantasy film wings and details on his head. He needs paint though that is one of todays projects Thats a great idea with the feathery fluff, I really wish I had some, I would do the same thing
Hehehe she sparkles because of all the microbeads and glass bubbles and swarovski crystals that I used!! I need to take a super close up detail pic of her back lol!
I poked holes into the body and then baked The wings fit perfectly in the back but you can see the wing to the right is falling out a bit because I had not yet glued them in when I took this pic but it is fixed now I'm not sure what would happen if you baked the wings with the film on I found the micro beads on ebay but I think the seller has an etsy too, let me find them for you!! The beads are so small that they have no holes! I need to go to the hobby lobby too, haven't been yet and I feel like they will have everything I need!! :3
